At what point does it go beyond a normal cold cough?

DS has had a cold & cough on/off for the last 6 weeks or so - has got better then worse again.

the DR checked him all over and said it was just a normal cold and was 'loose'

It now sounds like a dry cough, and i'm giving him medicine, he's got a runny/stuffy nose at the mo, but the coughing has been getting worse - to the point of him retching when coughing (athou he;s also spent a lot of time with his dad of late who also retches when coughing.

yesterday DS was sick from coughing right after his dinner , today he's been saying he doesn't like food anymore

should I get him back to the dr's again - I have a feeling he's going to tell me it's just a normal cold thou.

is there anyway of knowing that it's more than a cold cough iycwim.

no way of knowingn yourself.
I have heardof bugs going round where people are coughing for this long, but it could also be asthma.

Ihave alos heardof gp's sayign a chest is clear, then poor parents rushing their kids into hospital for oxygen, or having antibiotics for chets infections that 24 hrs previously were not diagnosed.

If YOU are not happy, go back.

If he was mine I would give it a couple more days, but keep a beady eye on the coughing and if the coughing gets worse then take him back to the doctor. Unless you are really worried, or he starts a fever or anything in which case I would take him back sooner.

I don't know of any way to tell if it's more than a cold/cough - are you concerned it may be asthma or something?

DS always gets a cold at this time and it l;ingers for ages. It has cleared up now after giving him a multivitamin every day, even though he eats loads of fruit and veggies.

Ds had a long term cough esp at night, for weeks last winter. GP just said it might be asthma. She gave us an inhaler to try twice a day (before bad and on getting up) and we tried it briefly and it helped him sleep a bit better, but cough went by ityself with the warmer weather.

sorry bed not bad

My DS had a cough that just wouldn't go away, I could hear it was getting a bit rattly as well and he was sort of wheezing a bit when he was sleeping. He was being treated for an infection at the time but his temperature didn't go down with the antibiotics and when I took him back to the doctor she found he had a chest infection so had to have a different type of antibiotic.

As missing says, I would keep an eye out for a fever and if you're not happy go back. Don't think you are wasting the doctor's time, its important you get your mind put at rest if your gut feeling is telling you your DS is not getting better. 6 weeks seems to me a long time to have a cough so I'd be inclined to get him looked over again.

well I did take him in the end - saw the horrid one as well whom I don't like - but at least he knew I wasn't pulling a 'fast' one this time like he seems to think I do when I take DS to see him.

anyhow gave him a full once ove & said every things clear, one ear's slightly red but nothin major.

so will keep an eye on him & hope he it goes soon. D did say thou if no better take him back.

yes asthema is on my mind as well/chest infections as we have several members of the family with it.
