Quick Q - 18 mo with stuffy nose

She's just woken up, clearly can't breathe in her sleep (she insists on a dummy). What can I do to clear her nose? It's runny rather than blocked, so while Olbas oil might break it up how can I clear it for her.

I'm not above sucking it out myself, but wondering if there is a better way? She doesn't know how to blow it herself yet.

I've got a bottle of nasosal from her last cold but it says use with 1 month of opening. Do I have to strictly adhere to that? Any better way so I can get her down? This is the second night she has been up. Not sure why last night but this is definitely her nose.

Have you got any medised? I know it's contra-indicated for under twos now, but it'll be fine as a one off.

the antihistamine in it acts as a decongestant, and will also help her sleep.

You too Bumper? I've just given Ashton and Parsons powders to LO, they've worked a treat before, but she's proving impossible tonight.

She is streaming as well. And coughing. But its all loose and runny. Her eyes are streaming. Its just a full-on cold.

Have you propped the top of her cot up?

I didn't know that about Nasosal. I think I may have used the same bottle from one baby to the next. Oops. No harm done, anyway.

I don't think you can clear it for her though

DH has just manfully stepped up to the plate and had a suck on F's nose!!!! Nothing came out, but it seems to have helped as he was able to feed a bit better.

do those sucky snot things work then butterfly?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/12/2008 22:33

The sucky snot things are called nasal aspirators! We've got one that's like a rubber ball on the end of a pointy thing. You squeeze all the air out of the balloon bit, stick the pointy bit up lo's nostril and let go of the balloon and it's supposed to suck out the snot. We've never had much luck with it though.

As for the sline, I would use it!

Thanks for all the help. I went for olbas oil on a muslin and some calpol. She is asleep now after much protesting. She was playing while she was up so she couldn't have been that poorly!
