Teething or a cold?

Firstly, sorry for asking dimwit questions, my ds hasn't really had a proper cold before now, so I feel such a novice and he is my first born.
He definitely has a cold, streaming snotty nose and difficulty breathing. He also has bright red cheeks and dribbling lots.
This afternoon, he was inconsolable for an hour, just screaming and I couldn't do anything for him, he wanted cuddles, then he didn't etc etc.
I know it's nothing compared to other posts here and if he is unsettled again tonight, I will try a bit of Calpol, which we haven't used for a few months.
I am waffling, but my question is: can teething suddenly really hurt for like an hour and then be fine? Or is it just cold symptoms?
He's 13 months and with no teeth to his name yet.
Any advice/thoughts really appreciated. Thanks for reading.

sounds like teething.

have you tried ashton and parsons teething powders? they're very good.

my ds always poured dribble and red checks with teething. def signs. you should give himsome calpol if in pain. also teether ringsetc help. my ds liked it when i put wet flannel in freezer then rubbed along his gums

Does sound like teething tbh, he does have all the classic signs with the dribble and the red cheeks.
This time of year, it is possible it's a bit of both but treating it as teething won't do any harm at all, as for the crying for an hour and then being not too bad, he'll tire himself out at some point and realise nothing is helping so no point in crying.
Teething powders are good, I know lots of people that used them. Me personally am a big fan of Dentinox teething gel, it's fantastic stuff and can be applied every 20 mins (think bonjela is every 2 hours or something but don't quote me)
A bit of calpol will be fine if he's in pain.

could be both but red cheeks = teething imo
try hyland's teething tablets, they're v good

i swear by ambesol liquid. i always found gels got licked off or too mixed in saliva to work. you have to ask chemist for the one for kids

thanks so much for responding. in some ways, i hope it is a tooth, as he has been showing classic teething signs since he was 4 months old! i am praying that each tooth won't take this long.
i'll look into those different recommendations, thanks. he is now totally fine, that's what i dont understand, surely he can't go from being inconsolable to being fine again?
thanks
