How can I comfort my 7-month ds

My ds is now ill AGAIN for the third time in three weeks. First two times it was a chest infection and now it is an ear infection. (if you can trust gps). I have been to the GP twice in 3 days as this time he has been crying uncontrollably for hours and I am at my wits end. He is normally a happy chap. I was up all night and could not comfort him at all. Now he is screaming again and I want to slit my wrists at the thought of another night like last night.

He is on anti-biotics AGAIN and calpol and nurofen every few hours. But asides from not being happy about all this medication, it is not calming him sufficiently. I am already sleep deprived as he is a dreadful sleeper and have two other children running me ragged. Just shouted at ds1 who was acting up and quite simply not coping. I can't think straight when my baby is crying continuously.

Does anyone have any ideas? Help please

does he like being held / rocked / walked around in a sling?
warm bath?
so sorry for you
can anyone give you a break? even 5 mins away from him can help you calm down a bit

I was going to suggest a sling too.

How about trying some skin to skin cuddles?

Hi I spent the whole night walking and rocking. He still cried but when I sat down he positively shrieked. My bak is now breaking and I don't have the physical energy to that for a prolonged length of time again. My dh is trying to help but he is comforted best by me so when I hear him crying in dh's arms I just can't relax.

It feels like he has been ill forever. Should I be worried, the GP said not.

You need to let your dh take a turn; you will cope better with a little respite - even if it is just a cup of tea in the next room.

Does he settle in the car? Perhaps your dh could take him for a little drive while you have relaxing bath.

i would lay off the antibiotics next time, although you will have to finish the course this time.

they don't take away the pain of an ear infection, and they can really upset the stomach of a baby. after the anti biotic course i would really reccomend you give baby some bifidus infantis powder from your health food shop to restore his stomach and boost his immune system

there are some ear drops you can get but i can't remember what they are called,

poor you and your lo.
can your dh make lots of cups of tea?

scifinerd · 11/12/2008 19:54

Hi Kalo, yes I have been worrying about the anti-biotics but desperate to get him well again. Also the calpol and nurofen aren't taking the pain away. I like the sound of the bifidus powder so I may well try it.

Do I need the ear drops prescribed?

And the car may be an idea Isaidkissme

Thank you.

i don't think so, the ones i've seen were in a health food shop and were a natural product.

stay with the calpo, but forget the nurofen as ibuprofen is not good for babies, and things that upset intestines often give rise to ear infections.

have you thought of cranio-sacral therapy?

scifinerd · 11/12/2008 20:38

I have heard that about nurofen but if he is running a temperature, isn't it vital to get that down?

oh i don't know. i'm not an expert about it. doesn't calpol bring temp down?

and cooling him down with undressing and wiping with cool flannel. i have read that that is the most effective way

how are you getting on?
