he has a cold but i rang to ask what i could give for a cough as it was making him horse and can hear it on his chest. He ust said put him in a hot steamy bathroom et etc and use saline drops, none of which will help

he said give calpol to help 'head cold' he is 3 week today.. would you? It certainly isnt going to help the cough

With NHS Direct they will be really quick to call you back as baby so young (they make you wait hours for older kids!).

keep an eye on the cough. my ds had a cough at 6 weeks which i just put down to a cold but over night he developed a temp and stopped feeding well so took him to doctors who sent us to hospital with suspected bronchiolitis. we had to stay in for four days as it had developed in to pneumonia!!! I now wish i had had him checked earlier and not thought that i was bothering the doctor with just a cold. I would get him checked just for peace of mind and especially as he is so little things can develop really quickly. Hope i have not worried you now i am sure he will be fine.

Yep, what Egg says. They were great when my DD was a bit dehydrated and vomiting and she was older than your baby. No harm in ringing, if only for reassurance.

m4mb, dd2 had RSV at 3 weeks old and like some of the others here have said tiny babies do become very poorly really quickly.

TBH, if i was you i would call NHS direct and seek reasurance now, and then see how he goes through the night, the first sign of any breathing difficulties (tummy dipping in just under his ribs) going of his feeds, or any blueness around his lip then take him straight to A&E.
