Mouth breathing - is it a problem?

Dd1 has always breathed through her mouth and snores at night. She often has chapped lips too. Never thought anything of it until SiL pointed it out and said it could be her adenoids, as she had to have them out when she was young. I have made an appointment at the doctors for her for tomorrow morning but now am wondering if I am wasting her time. Is it always the sign of a problem?

ds1 is a mouth breather.. no sign of anything problems.. other than sore lips.. which is easily prevented with vaseline..

hope all goes well.

One slight problem with mouth breathing is an increased risk of dental decay, as the mouth tends to be drier so the beneficial effects of saliva on neutralising acid produced by bacteria are reduced.

Hey! We're on line at the same time.

I've asked SIL about it myself (not in relation to your DD, but in relation to my DS who has his ENT referral for next week) and she said she really felt the difference in her breathing after having the adenoids removed. She said its very uncomfortable breathing through your mouth all the time. I think she was about the same age as your DD when she had them removed. The surgeon said they were the biggest he'd ever seen and let her bring them home in a jar .

I don't see any harm in speaking to the doctor tomorrow. KUP.
