DD (3) started being unwell about 10 days ago and has gone from being poorly, to really unwell na dbcak to poorly again with a few good bits in between. Last night she woke up sobbing, holding herself between the legs and saying she needed the toilet but then not going. When she used the toilet first thing this morning she didn't wee for as long as usual and as far as i know she hasn't been since. She's now asleep on the sofa (unheard of apart from this last week or so). No temperature although she does have red cheeks.

Could it be wher the cold has got inot her tummy and upset her urine?

TIA

It is more likely taht the fluid she is taking on board is helping her temp and throat etc and so she is not needing to pee. My dd does this, it always amazes me that I can give her loads of warm juice when she is ill but she never pee's. I think it gets absorbed to stop her dehydrating. I am not diagnosing, I am just passing on my comments (have been accused of online diagnosing on here before and wont make that mistake again). Hope she gets better soon.

It happened to my father two Christmases ago - bad cold and then a urine infection that left him in hospital for 2 nights.

Has she been drinking properly? Colds do leave you dehydrated - sweating, all that snot, breathing through your mouth and that kind of thing. Also having reduced appetite and loss of taste just puts you off drinking. All that together, I am guessing, would leave you susceptable to urine infections.

I would get her checked by a doctor to make sure she doesn't need some anti-biotics.

thanks both of you. I've managed to get her an appt for this afternoon. I have a urine sample pot take to the doctors so that they can test her - can i put a bowl under the rim of the toilet and then pour the wee (if I can get her to do one) into the sample pot? I dont see how else I'm going to catch any urine. If she's not happy weeing, she's certainly not going to wee into a tiny plastic bottle is she?

That is all I would do is put a big tub under her, or if you still have a potty get her to pee in that and pour it into the pot. Good luck, keep us updated.

Good news about the appointment.

A potty sounds like a good idea - it would be difficult to hold a plastic tub in place, I would think.

I would try running a tap once you have got her in the bathroom to encourage her to wee.

.

Hope your DD is feeling better soon.

we are a pottyless house now so a thin plastic bowl thing (probably had chinese takeaway in it at some stage) has been celotaped to the inside of the toilet and squeezed into the bottom of the pan ready for when DD wakes up. The things we parents have to do huh? I've now got to wash the other 4 bowls that i tried first but didn't fit!!

well, back from doctors and DD doesn't have a urine infection according to his little strip chart tester thingy-jig. He said her throat is very rad but then it would be with all her coughing, her chest is a tad rattley but then we knew that. So, who knows? I think perhaps this bout of cold/cough etc has just knocked her for 6 and I might have been guilty of not giving her enough time to recover properly. So, what now? She's still grizzly and crying on and off. I've never known her be like this for so long. Any tips gratefully received.

TIA

Oh sorry you didn't get a definite diagnosis. Nothing worse than being told it is just a virus.

Lots of fluids and rest is the only thing. Calpol might help if you think she is in pain with her throat or with the weeing. DS2 had something similar 2 yrs ago when he was 3 and he was ill for 2 weeks and all we could do was sit it out. It took another 2 weeks after that before he was fully back to normal.

I hope your DD recovers more quickly than that.

thanks Niecie. Sorry to hear about your DS though.

Aaaawww poor wee lamb. Any time my dd's are sick they normally have a 'peek' when they are really ill and then suddenly they turn a corner. Perhaps the weeing thing etc has been your dd 'peek' and she will turn the corner now. Calpol and Nurofen at 2 hour intervals (i.e Calpol at 8 then nurofen at 10 and so on) works wonders for keeping them going. Hope she is better soon.

thanks singyswife. She asked for medicine at bedtime tonight although after her marathon 'nap' on the sofa this afternoon she seemed quite bright. Still only about 5 twirls of pasta for dinner though although she did manage half a fairy cake afterwards!

Tomorrow is another day though huh?
