We have only noticed it today, she is teething, blotchy face, intermittent grumpiness, shovelling everything in her mouth, but her hands and feet are/were quite pink and puffy, so much so that she has got wrist adn ankle wrinkles that she has never had before.
They look hot but are cool to touch, not out of normal, any ideas?

She's 14 months btw, sorry

Geepers · 10/12/2008 21:11

how is her urine output? Is her face puffy too?

louii · 10/12/2008 21:12

Hand foot and mouth???

ChirpyGrinch · 10/12/2008 21:14

Face is a bit puffy, but that could be teething. Urine quite low now you mention it, nappies aren't as full as normal.
Off to goggle hand foot and mouth.

Not h,f and m, she has no spots apart from some mild red blotches on her arms.

You'll need to take her to the GP for these symptoms. It's best to get her checked over, the GP's far better than any of us.

wannaBe · 10/12/2008 21:18

could be a virus.

I had a virus a few weeks ago that made all my joints swell, hands/fingers/knees/ancles/feet etc. My urine output was also quite low for a couple of days and after some googling I convinced myself that I was in kidney failure hav vowed never to seak out simptoms again.

Anyway I had lots of blood tests which confirmed all my bodily functions were normal so was considered to be a virus.

The head at ds' school told me that one of the other heads had had the same thing, so could just be comething going round?

scrooged · 10/12/2008 21:19

but it's best to check it out with the GP.

ChirpyGrinch · 10/12/2008 21:40

Hmm, I was thinking of taking her but wanted to check it was something weird and not overprotective mother syndrome!

Dh has been off colour all day too and DD1 is still complaining her bottom hurts after a possible urine infection, so it's all fun here!

OP posts:
scrooged · 10/12/2008 21:44

I wouldn't worry about being overprotective. GP's tend to trust a parent's instinct. If it's not normal then it's best to get it checked.

Is it like swelling or can you push down and it holds it shape for a while (slower than memory foam)?

ChirpyGrinch · 10/12/2008 21:45

Its not firm, you can push it down but it comes back again. She is not one for sitting still and being poked though so not 100%!

OP posts:
scrooged · 10/12/2008 21:48

Does it come back up straight away?

ChirpyGrinch · 10/12/2008 22:02

I think so, not really sure, and dont want to wake her, why? Is it improtant?

OP posts:
scrooged · 10/12/2008 22:05

Oedema is water retention, it's different to swelling as oedema has different causes and takes a while to go back up after being depressed. Swelling has other causes (ie an allergic reaction). Do take her to the GP though so he/she can check her over. It's easy to miss things in children.

scrooged · 10/12/2008 22:07

Don't wake her. Let the GP sort it out. It may be nothing but should be checked, especially if it is not 'normal' for her.

ChirpyGrinch · 10/12/2008 22:25

TBH she has such tiny hands and feet I couldn't tell you to be sure!
We were thinking it might just be water retention but I dont know. Will take her tomorrow.
thanks for reassurance I am not being silly! I am always second guessing, which is silly as the 2 times I went with 'I just know they are not right' and odd symptoms we ended up in paeds overnight! so I do know my own children!

Fingers crossed this doesnt gol same way though, we are staying with my family this weekend for christmas thigns....

scrooged · 10/12/2008 22:38

I hope she's feeling better soon.
Keep me posted.

morocco · 10/12/2008 22:39

hope things go well with gp tomorrow. it's worth checking if the swelling seems worse in the morning then goes down a bit during the day - mention to gp if that is the case.

Geepers · 11/12/2008 07:15

Let us know how you get on. Hope she's okay.

ChirpyGrinch · 11/12/2008 07:58

She's still fast asleep (although DD1 has been up for hours) typical.
Although it does seem to have gone down overnight so not sure whether am going to take her now or hang on for afternoon appt.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 11/12/2008 08:04

Take her this morning - there is a rare (so it's unlikely to be this) illness which has swollen hands and feet as one of it's defining factors.

A relative of mine was diagnosed with this by her cardiologist uncle after their GP missed it so I'm linking to this so you can be informed. But don't panic - it was just the first thing that came to mind for me.

ChirpyGrinch · 11/12/2008 15:28

Sitting here waiting for appt....at half 4! Couldn't get through until all am appts were gone, and then ahd to wait until 11 to ring for pm appts. and tea is at 5ish so DH and DD1 willk have to stay home and start eatng as if they are running late, need prescription, rush hour traffic etc we might not get back until gone 6, and bedtime is 7 so DD2 will be vile if she hasnt eaten properly, aaagh!

I went to shops earlier and took her to the pharmacy counter to get e 2nd opinion, and she agreed it looked odd, plus DD2 just managed to start a massive blotchy rash on her face up to her ears.
Am hoping it is a combination of teething and cold as she refuses gloves and then sticks her fists in ehr mouth, but her hands don't feel cold, and she has not been outside for more than a few minutes.

OP posts:
NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 11/12/2008 15:31

Did you see the link I did - don't want to worry you unecessarily but sore mouth, rash, irritability and the swelling are some of the symptoms it mentions.

ChirpyGrinch · 11/12/2008 20:52

I did see it, thanks, but her mouth isn't sore, she just is dribbling and chewing anything she can get hold off, but is quite happy to have ehr teeth brushed etc.

Saw doc, he was fairly non-plussed, and as DD2 insisted on chatting to him the whole time,a nd handing him things from the table he said that as long as she is still bright and alert then not to worry. But he has no clue what it is.

How reassuring!
