Q FOR ANYONE WITH BABY WITH SILENT REFLUX AND GAVISCON..

ds1 had awful reflux, various medications et etc. ds2 nearly 3 weeks old i think may have silent reflux but dont have any experience on 'silent' so would appreciate some advice?

He is windy but it gets stuck. When he is asleep he is very unsettled. When your holding him say on your shoulder and he is asleep and feels settled, put him down to sleep and will then writh around waking and then falling asleep then waking again. I always thought this was wind but am now thinking silent reflux. He gets hiccups loads and hates being laid down after a feed (despite trying to prop him up) He has also had a very stuffy nose which was put down to mucus as a newborn however this is awful when he is laying down and no amount of drops or inhalent stuff changes it. He was put on nutramigen last week and seems he has dairy intolerance (ds1 allergic)

its really getting me down as you cant get any sleep at night as he so unsettled. im seeing doc later and thinking of asking for gaviscon (this did nothing for ds1) just wondering what are the chances of it being reflux and would the gaviscon work?

I used gaviscon for ds's reflux, I had to put a sachet in with every feed, did this for about a week and it did seem to help a bit, but they wanted to keep him on it for the entire time he drinks milk which I wasn't happy about.
Discuss reflux with your gp, but it is very hard to diagnose and they don't actually like to test for it as the only ways are either x-ray or camera down the throat and the chances of catching it actually happening are slim.
Like I said on your other thread, ds was put on a prescription formula which worked pretty much instantly but he doesn't have allergies on intolerances. I did kick up a stink with my gp to get referred to hospital too

with ds1 history my gp has been a bit more sympathic but i had so many probs with him, took 3 months for them to listen to me and finally put him on medications and he had barium x ray plus scan on tummy. i dont want to go through all that again.

ds2 is nowhere near like that as ds1 would projectile vomit every feed aswell and would scream all the time.

i remember gaviscon just making the milk all thick?

My ds would sick and scream with every feed too. The gaviscon did make the milk a bit thicker, but I didn't like the idea of using it. You'll have to get bigger teats or strtch yours out a bit.
Did I say that I was told to keep ds upright for 45 mins after each feed?

yes u did, all reflux stuff sadly stuck in my head firmly as was only 2 yrs ago and caused mypnd which imtrying so hard to avoid.

why didnt u like gaviscon every feed?

Our ds2 is due in 9 weeks and dreading the possibility of going through all this again. It's awful isn't it?
Re: the gaviscon, this might sound a bit silly, but you know how they tell adults not too take too much of that kind of thing as it leaves chalk behind in the stomach and can cause ulcers?
I know they must make babies ones differently, but they were talking about adding this to every feed for possibly years. It prob would have sorted itself out at the weaning stage anyway, but I just wasn't happy with it. Can't really explain it, but I didn't look it up or do any research into it, I just said no, find something else.
Saved me a fortune on formula on the plus side though

this is true! its hard because i dont know wether to follow my intuition that something IS wrong (like with ds1) or that im being nurotic or something. Hence the thread. DH said to me when i told him i thought ds2 was intolerant 'your looking for something that isnt there' but he is better on nutramigen....

I dont want my gp to fob me off but im going to see her about my pnd so maybe that'll help my case!

It must be difficult to not look for the same probs in dc2 as dc1 had, I think that' pretty normal but at the same time, they don't call it mothere intuition for nothing do they?
When ds started being sick after every feed, I took him gp and was told it was a viral infection and would pass. I took him back a few days later and was told the same thing. I knew it wasn't a viral infection, I didn't know what is was but knew it wasnt that so was at the doctors twice a week for about 4 weeks before they took me seriously. I was a 1st time mum so to them I was being too precious, but I followed my git feelings and it finally got sorted.

yeah i was called 'a nurotic first time mother' my a paed with ds1! his exact words! I know exactly what you mean

Good luck with it. You're doing all you can, so try not to get too down about it, know that's easier said than done, but this is not your fault and it's not like your not doing anything.

My DD had severe reflux (mostly silent although she did throw up on breast milk). I found gaviscon useless and ended up with Nestargel - probably for at least 8 months (she was also on hypoallergenic milk), which thickens it much more. You generally have to order it in at the chemist but no problem to get.

My dd had silent reflux. GP very reluctant to diagnose, wanted me to wait it out, and wouldn't prescribe infant gaviscon. Bought it over the counter instead, and added it to all her feeds (ebm in bottles), as well as feeding her slightly upright, tilting her moses basket mattress, etc. She was MUCH better within a day or so, and all in all, I'd say it took about 4 weeks in total to clear it up completely. Felt the reflux was brought on by her jabs. Each new set of infant jabs she had, brought the reflux back again.

My advice, just try the gaviscon for a few days, my dd was much happier as a result. If you are not noticing a difference within that time, then you can go back to the GP, and if you are, then that's great.

i cant work out wether to ask for change of milk (in case he intollerant to soya like ds1) or try gaviscon first??

reflux did nothing for my DS who had silent reflux and in fact made him constipated which added to his problems

we went on to ranitadine and domperidone and within a week it was like having a different baby

they have to be prescribed by a Paed so ask for a referal from your GP

I am sure my ds had silent reflux altho never diagnosed - he did just grow out of it at around 4 months although it was 4 nightmarish months of never being able to put him down and zero sleep. dh's reaction v similar to yours but i KNEW something was not right. Wish I had tried baby gaviscon - sure you can get it over the counter so maybe worth a try - fingers crossed he will grow out of it quickly like mine & this will just ease it for the next few months x

Yes, you can buy it from any chemist. Over the counter (infant gaviscon)

ok so ds was making that noise whilst in doc and she goes 'is he snoring' i said no thats the noise he been making since birth ive been complaining about. She put a hand on his tummy and said 'yes he is refluxing' so i have gaviscon... have to give till thur when the HV is coming round and go from there. if it doesnt work then have to go to consultant. At least she listened to me and i feel abit lighter about it. Just praying gaviscon does the trick....

That's good news then. Give the gaviscon about a week. And remember you might find you need biggwer teats as the liquid will be a bit thicker.

well it pours out of the one he has at mo as nutramigen is quite thin so hopefully it'lhelp! Just hope he doesnt get constipated

Just stopped giving DS gaviscon, he was on it for 14 weeks or so. He was screaming all day and vomiting every feed, then went to vomiting every feed but not screaming so gaviscon helped with the acid refkux, now he has stopped vomiting since GP decided he was dairy intolerant and is on a soya formula.

ds1 was always worse while he was on even hydrolysed soya or dairy, thats why i ended up putting him on nanny goat milk. He now is still on delamere. Soya he can eat the equivalent of one slice of bread (has soya in) but no more so still intolerant but still allergic to dairy.

Im glad your dc got better. I know there is light at the end of the tunnel just hard looking through the tunnel!
