No 24 hour chemists nearby and we only have saline drops in the house and there's only so many times I want use those (worried re salt intake). Wanted to get some Olbas oil but none at sainsburys earlier. Have tea tree oil. Will this help?

do you have any vicks vapour rub?

mckenzie · 07/12/2008 21:22

just seen that you are North London. On the off chance that you are anywhere near Enfield, I have vicks and olbas oil at my house that you can borrow until you get yourself some tomorrow.

I have become a champion snot sucker with my 3.5 month old. Saline drops didn't cut it and she couldn't feed so i took the plunge and sucked it out . The good thing at their age is as they are so small there isn't too much

nooka · 07/12/2008 21:36

Propping the cot up bit can help - a phone book under each leg at the head end gives a slight tilt. To be honest I'm not sure that vicks, olbas etc make very much difference.

If it's keeping them (and you) awake a few minutes in a steamy bathroom can clear it enough to go to sleep. Also, a wet towel over their radiator can keep the air humid and help a bit.

Can recommend Snufflebabe when you can get to the shops.

diginglebells · 07/12/2008 22:16

Thanks mckenzie - DH just found a chemist in Golders Green and got some Olbas for Children. Have got some on a tissue just by my son's head.

Sazzles - was thinking about doing this earlier (he's asleep now)...do you literally just put your lips round their nose and suck?

nooka DS sleeps on his front (which makes it worse with all the snot falling forward), so wasn't sure if this would be effective. Can't hurt to try though.

lastyears thanks, will do that too.

will watch with interest, particularly for the snot sucking instructions! (5 month old with blocked nose here and can't buy a turkey baster nasal bulb aspirator thingy to get it out

belgo · 08/12/2008 07:38

Saline drops and a sucker.

belgo · 08/12/2008 07:40

and a steamy bathroom.

It never occured to me to worry about salt intake from samine drops, as the percentage of salt to fluid is the same as in the blood, so I didn't think it was a problem.

mckenzie · 08/12/2008 08:12

How was your DS last night diginglebells?
Another tip I was given years ago was to rub vicks vapour rub on the feet, liberally over the instep and the ball of the foot, should help with breathing. Reflexology points apparently. WOrks for me

yarooo · 08/12/2008 08:15

ah

you have to get brave

mouth over baby's nose

suck gently

spit

really not a big deal. and more effective than "nasal aspirators"

SazzlesIsASleighBell · 08/12/2008 08:56

Yaroo is right, although they may need a little pinning down when they realise what is coming

diginglebells · 08/12/2008 22:06

The Olbas helped Mckenzie, and only needed to administer saline drops about 5am - but there were some giant bogeys that needed prising out this morning.

He's sleeping a lot better now so I think we've avoided snot sucking this time round

I have a little oil burner and burn diluted olbas oil(using water and lots of drops) in the girls room when they have a cold, helps alot! It is on a high shelf and is only lit with a night light(candle) for safety, checked regulary!
