My ds is having his fitted tomorrow, and from the literature I have been given it looks like it will be huge!! I am worried for him, what will it be like for him eating and speaking? Will it be noticable he has a brace even with his mouth shut? Does anyone having any calming words of advice please? TIA

DSs both have removable braces. They're 7 & 9. you can't tell when their mouths are shut - pretty much all the wire etc is behind their teeth.

He;ll lisp a lot to start with but this clears as they get used to it (didn't go completely with either SmallDragon but it did decrease). Eating wasn't a problem past the first day which was uncomfortable.

Don't worry-they soon get used to it. They don't need to worry about how they look it is so common, it seems as if we see most of the school population of our town down at the orthodontist!

MY 2 dc had removable braces and the dentist told them to take them out to eat at school - they had a little brace box in their bag.

They hated them at first but dd was really good at wearing hers. Ds complained constantly and at first could hardly speak clearly. The dentist told him to read aloud every day to get used to it. The cleaning part was also a constant battle. I think if it bothers your ds at first you can try to convince him ofthe benefits, how better his teeth will look, how when he's grown up he'll have less problems and expense going to the dentist etc. Good luck.

Well, he's got it and it is big!! Have to say Ds is being a little hero though, and seems to be taking it in his stride!! Just hope to doesn't get to much grief at school.
