Excessive drooling in 2.5 year old DD. Any ideas??

Hi,

My DD2 still drools loads. She soaks the front of all her clothes and her face and chest are permanently wet. She speaks very well, has all her teeth, and can drink and eat normally.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why she is still drooling so much? I'm starting to wonder whether there may be another reason for it, but I don't know what that could be. Any advice would be appreciated.

Does she snore? Maybe she needs her adenoids out especailly if she is a persistant mouth breather.

Is it always? My dd currently has tonsilitis and is drooling loads at the moment. Does she have a cold, sore throat etc that might prevent/put her of from swallowing frequently?

Thanks for your replies. Reallytired - yes, she snores and she does seem to be a mouth breather.

The drooling is constant too.

mine too JeanieG

I mean constantly, even the nursery staff comment they've never met such a dribbler and it never stops regardless of time of day etc. all the clothes handed down to her from DD1 are all ruined round the collar - even with bibs on and won't be getting handed down to DD3

she's 2.7yrs btw, shall be watching this with interest

Please ask your GP for an appointment with ENT and also ask for an appoint with paediatric audiology to check out hearing.

People can be very mean to children who dribble.

My son never dribbled, but he had a constant snotty nose (as well has glue ear). When he had his adenoids removed it really improved the quality of his life.

Thanks reallytired, will make an appointment on Monday.

Dizzy-I know what you mean about ruined clothes.

JeanieG does your DD have a dummy? my DD1 didn't but DD2 does and I wondered if that added to it?

JeanieG · 05/12/2008 19:43

yes, she does have a dummy but drools regardless if she has it or not. This is what I originally thought was the cause of the drooling.

I've just thought, she also seems to bite her tongue at some point each meal time. Would this be anything?

oh I hadn't noticed that, will watch like a hawk at breakfast

DD2 also drools regardless of dummy but DD1 hadn't had a dummy and didn't drool so wondered if the dummy was the cause - don't think so then!

will wait and see if DD3 is a St Bernard Baby too

Ok. DS had excesive drooling, really up until he was 4 years old. I asked my HV for a referral to a Speech and Language therapist. The therapist said they only worry if it continues after they are 5 years old.

We were given exercises to help DS become more aware of his swallowing reaction and approaching his 5th birthday he is now fine.

Dont worry, get the Dentist to check her tongue and teeth and if all is ok, ask for a similar referral to ours in a year or so if it is still a problem.
