Is exceptable for DD2 to go to nuresery tomorrow even though DD1 has had scarlet fever?

DD2 has her first morning at nursery tomorrow and I dont want her to miss it but DD1 came out in scarlet fever on sunday, started antibiotics on monday so in effect she has been excluded for 5 days.

Tomorrow I am wondering if I can take DD2 and DD1 to drop her off or will the nursery be funny about that?

I would.

You don't tend to keep whole family home when 1 person is ill.

npg1 · 04/12/2008 15:00

yes doc told me that but then read on net it was 5 days.

There is no point to send DD1 back to school tomorrow so she will have to come with me or leave her with MIL.

You will be well loved if SF gets spread around just before christmas.

Its funny about scarlet fever it used to kill as many kids as measles and be as feared as measles. When my mother had it she was in isolation for two weeks.

They have never been able to make a vaccine for scarlet fever, but the death rate has declined the same rate as measles. Funny that.

npg1 · 04/12/2008 16:51

I know. DD2 has been on antibiotics for an ear infection so hopefully that would have killed off any scarlet fever if she was carrying it.

Also DD1 wants to go back to school tomorrow. I found found a few sites that say keep excluded for 3 days or 5 days. What would you do? She started antibiotics mon.

We were told 48 hours of ab's. Can you postpone dd2's visit until next week , then you'll have a clear conscience and not potentially get off on the wrong foot with staff and fellow parents

Beeper - you imply that measles and scarlet fever are the same, and hint that this might mean that vaccines for measles are therefore unnecessary. This is - frankly - a bollocks argument.

Measles is a virus, and scarlet fever is caused by a bacteria. The reason why the mortality rate (and severity) for scarlet fever has declined is because of antibiotics. Antibiotics are of no use in tacking measles. The decline in measles deaths is down to vaccination.

Twiglett · 04/12/2008 18:21

Of course it's acceptable

Unless she is showing symptoms of course.

You don't keep one child off because they might be incubating something another child has.

Firepile · 04/12/2008 18:21

I may have been a bit hasty there - antibiotics can help prevent complications (like pneumonia) in measles. But the main driver of reduced mortality is vaccination.

LOL at firepile, Language please.

DD had scarlet fever in the summer & it can be very dangerous. She came out in a rash before she was diagnosed (on the 3rd visit to the doctor ) which turned out could have killed her if it hadn't been for the anti-biotics {shock]
I'm just soooooo glad we have the medication to deal with it

npg1 · 04/12/2008 19:37

Thanks ladies, so we are all for taking her tomorrow. DD1 will have to pop in with me to? She is fine now and has been on anti's for 5 days but im not sending her to school tomorrow just to be on safe side although she is so wanting to go back!

not an expert, but I would be concentrating more on dd2 - isn't there a chance that she will develop scarlet fever over the next few days? I am a bit over-cautious on these things but I would want to be very sure that I wasn't sending my child into nursery if she was possibly contagious.

npg1 · 04/12/2008 19:52

But DD2 has been on antibiotics at the same time so hopefully that would have killed off anything that was brewing IYSWIM !

sorry, missed that bit... didn't know they worked like that! [medically ignorant emoticon]

DoNotsAntlers · 04/12/2008 19:59

It is not airborne.

You would have to out skin secretions or saliva into teh mouths of someone to infect them.

You will be fine as long as she doesn't start snogging the babies.
