Sorry but I have an irrational fear of headlice and want to be fully prepared for when my DD brings them home from school. Any advice on which is the best way to get rid of them (quickly) would be appreciated. Anyone scratching their head yet?

hi

my dd got her visitors from nursery, we were told to use conditioner in the hair and a nit comb, the conditioner makes the hair easy to comb with a nit comb, and the eggs will come out.

we tried full marks from boots but it burnt the back of her neck, like sunburn. It was terrible, so was then told by docs to use conditioner.

Wet hair
apply conditioner (lots)
comb, comb, comb (seperate hair into sections and get a nitty gritty comb)

repeat every other night for at least two weeks - best to do two weeks AFTER you see of the lice.

Keep hair tied up at all times, -preferably in a plait, use grips and invest in a good herbal spry that puts the lice off. (some smell a bit but it is a price worth paying IMO)

Oh and use a tee tree shampoo and conditioner for normal washes.

HTH!

Thanks, that sounds great. I was thinking along the lines of a nuclear attack just to make sure, but that sounds horrible pinkkoala, I won't buy that. I hope she didn't suffer too much. Did any of you catch them as well?

I have had them once, I have many dcs and they all have long hair - as do I. It happens occasionally.

Just follow the above in the shower each morning and you will get rid in no time.

The secret is to not think about them, don't think euugghhh crawly thing, think Oh goodness not another dull dull mother job Be tough on yourself and you will desensitise eventually. It is just a job almost all of us will have to do at some point!

Avoid nuclear attack, some work, some don't. Sometimes the lice get used to them and they stop working. Occasionally dcs react (like pinkkoala). It can be bad for asthma sufferers and many are bad for the environment.... shall I go on?

I'm sure you are right about desensitising, I used to be a vet nurse and had to deal with fleas, ticks, worms etc with no trouble at all, so I'm sure I will be ok with my own children. Thanks for all the advice, I will use conditioner when she does get them.
