Should I be medicating a runny nose?

Ds has had a runny nose for a coulpe of weeks now. I have been using Karvol drops in his room at night and some chest rub habe also raised his mattress a bit to help the breathing.
He is taking cough medicine for a cough so don't want to be giving him lots of different meds, but does he need calpol or ibuprofen to clear the nose properly?
There's no temperature, he's eating fine and drinking plenty and doesn't seem too distressed (until this morning).
Thanx

I wouldn't (haven't) for mine when they have had runny nose's. I only give calpol for high temp and if they seem to be in pain.

Worse thing here is I have 5, so as the last one gets better, the one who started it is ill again.

forgot to say hope your ds gets better soon

I wouldn't unless he seems to be in pain. I don't think they do much for runny noses. DD is very congested atm, must be the same bug. I've just been using vicks chest rub lots. Hope he's better soon

Thanx Charchar exactly what I thought, just wanted to check incase there is something else I should/could be doing for him.

No problem You do worry don't you, because they can't say what's wrong. I always worry DD is in a lot of pain and I don't know because she's always unsettled at night and don't give her anything. Can't win can we?!

littleboyblue · 01/12/2008 09:04

No we can't. I'm quite lucky as ds is fine through the night. I think I've had to go in to him once a night for the past week which is great considering that he's not too clever. I hear that he wakes up, has a coughing fit, a little groan, but he's fine. Settling is taking a bit longer, but think he's entering that phase where he doesn't want to go to bed anyway.
It is horrible when they're a bit ill. Never mind

no

Calpol is a painkiller and will reduce fever

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory

neither will help a runny nose

Anna8888 · 01/12/2008 09:47

No.

Keep him inside and warm. Give him a hot bath morning and night to clear his nose and throat - don't hesitate to clean his nose with some cotton wool dipped in hot water and applied with a corkscrew movement.

Ok, thanx ladies.
