CAN YOU GIVE ANTIOBIOTICS TO BABY WITH CHICKEN POX?

is it safe to give eyedrops and oral medicine when body already so overwhelmed with a disease??

Antibiotics are fine if needed.
Are they definately antibiotics and not antiviral?

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 30/11/2008 15:24

Yes they are ok to take howeve rit sounds to me that the conjunctivitis is caused by the cp and it says here that anti viral medicine may help rather than antibiotics?

'Chickenpox may present with eyelid swelling, eyelid vesicles, and localized conjunctival lesions. Less commonly, superficial punctate keratitis and dendritic keratitis can develop. Oral acyclovir may be beneficial.'

dd2 had more than one dose of antibiotics when she had chicken pox as she got terrible skin infections.

cheesesarnie · 30/11/2008 15:30

its fine.antibiotics are often given if any of the blisters get infected.

bumbly · 30/11/2008 17:53

yes but noticed doc gave dose for a two year old and mine isn't even 1 1/2

not impressed again with gp/nhs

also looked up conjunctivitis..and not a swollen eyelid

i think little one has swollen eyelid purely because he has a pox and to load him with antibiotics is unaccetable - dont think wiull give oral med but perhaps drops as a back up

how do you give drops to a baby? who wriggles and fights?

preferable with 2 people bumbly, someone to hold arms and body and the person giving drops holds head. otherwise could lay them accross your body. with the tv on at the same time might help as a distraction.

TheNewsMongersGeansaiNollag · 30/11/2008 18:11

I would definitely give him the anti=biotics if he has an erruption in his eye. That is one of the potential complications of CP.

I don't mean to alarm you, but if he has been prescribed anti-biotics please make sure he finishes the course.

bumbly, why take your child to the doctor at all?

Antibiotics will do no harm, yes the conjunctivitis may be viral, but it is certainly possible to get a secondary infection with bacteria. A large blister on the eyelid may cause a swelling, but so may conjunctivitis, bacterial or viral.

A 2 year old's dose for a 1 year old is probably fine, as well. Most times doctors calculate dosage by the child's weight, not their age, as children can vary so much in size at the same age. There is a large safety margin in most antibiotics, and in severe infections, the standard dose is often doubled or quadrupled.

I think you need to find a doctor you can trust, rather than take your child to this one, then blatantly ignore the advice you are given.

LIZS · 01/12/2008 15:53

Prescribed doses of medicine, even those also available over the counter, are calculated on body weight rather than age so it is probably correct. AB's are fine as he may be cocnenred about potential infection in the spot on eyelid as well as conjunctivitis. Poor chap, sounds as if his immunity has been down of late.
