It's not so much the sound, it's the fact your LO can't seem to take in any air.

It's a symptom of laryngitis, so they might get it if they've lost their voice, as the vocal chords swell.

Usually happens at night. Tiny breaths with closed mouth restore breathing ime, but call the out of hours service if you think your lo has it.

gigglewitch · 29/11/2008 00:26

starts with wheezy noises, then barking cough.

is this any help~?

TooTicky · 29/11/2008 00:27

Thanks. Dd2 was a bit like this when she woke up but is better now. Well, it's just the cough and general misery now...

how old is your lo?

TooTicky · 29/11/2008 00:29

Thanks yes, that is helpful. Barking is right. This may be a long night.

this might sound bonkers. Anyway, whilst you're waiting to go to the out-of-hours gp or whatever you might be heading for, perhaps try giving her honey in cooled boiled water? it seems to work on my dc

katch · 29/11/2008 00:32

Sorry yes there is a barky cough as well as the wheezing to breathe.
DS (age7) had it about a year ago and it was very distressing for him and scary for me.

TooTicky · 29/11/2008 00:33

Thanks yes, will try that now.

The tiny breaths may also sound bonkers, but I got it from a Buteyko breathing course - it definitely got his breathing out of the scary zone.
I had to sit him on my knee and do it with him.

TooTicky · 29/11/2008 00:36

We may avoid the bathroom actually as it is arctic, and anyway we have no hot water

The breathing thing sounds good. I remember using breathing exercises for my asthma.

This may be Just A Cough actually. When she coughs it is barky and awful but inbetween she is okay. Well, just miserable.

Buteyko's main claim to fame is its success with asthma!

Re. the bathroom: my A&E doc said the steam thing was more of a way of making parents feel they were doing something useful than being of any actual use.

DS was given steroids - apparently it's the new policy.

Hope everything goes okay - you'll know if you need to go to A&E, but still try the breathing to calm things down.

TooTicky · 29/11/2008 00:43

Thanks again

Am going to try taking her to bed - IF she will let me go for a wee that is!!

OP posts:
gigglewitch · 29/11/2008 00:48

agree, Katch - we have a humidifier which cures me, not my children's asthma

Delirious, a bit barky, not croupy

gigglewitch · 30/11/2008 00:41

anyone had any sleep then?

TooTicky · 30/11/2008 00:44

Well, I was just about to go up when she woke up all hot and waily. She is in my lap now. Daren't move....

Last night wasn't too bad once she went off again.

sorry

Seriously, hope she feels better soon.
Wishing you all peaceful dreams and no coughs tonight

Hey Toot, do you have any essential oils.....pine or tea-tree, you could put on some rag or something?

TooTicky · 30/11/2008 00:52

Thanks.

Just out of tea tree. I have snotblaster....

She's just had a wee and wants to go back to bed so that is a good sign, I hope. It's damned cold up there though!

gigglewitch · 30/11/2008 00:59

karvol and stuff good, if along those lines.

hope she's got a hot water bottle or something?

alipiggie · 30/11/2008 01:02

Best thing is Olbas Oil on a tissue not near enough for her to get it on her face. Honey Juice - melt honey with hot water, add in orange juice and then cold water and get her to sip. Works a treat. And see if you can get a humidifier on freecycle if nothing else. I've got boys that have repeatedly had croup/barking coughs. Take care.
