Laryngomalacia ongoing in toddler..

dd2 was 2 on Monday, and since she started this seasons' run of colds and coughs, it sounds as though her laryngomalacia (floppy larynx - and we thought it was getting better) has got worse again. Very noisy at night, frequent apnoea, goes from squeaky door noises to Darth Vader to choking and gasping: v stressful for us, and sounds v uncomfortable and exhausting for her. Some of it is stuffed nose/virus/cough, I know, but its really disturbing at times.

GP says what I already know: she's fine in herself during day, no infection, just catarrh following heavy cold/cough. Yeah, me too, but I don't sound like dd

Thing is, everyone (GP, ENT consultant) said she'd grow out of it by now. She hasn't.

I'm phoning for a paeds ENT appointment in the morning, but meantime just wondered if any other laryngo mums had experience of it taking longer than two years for their LOs to grow out of it?

Sorry Eli, no idea but i didn't want your post to go unanswered.

Poor you, as mum to a newly diagnosed 7 week old ds2 (5 weeks prem) i already understand all those awful nighttime noises and the absolutely terrifying choking and gagging.

Sorry your dd is going through such a rough patch with it and more than a little that she still has it at 2. I am dreading ds2 starting with all the bugs that ds1 will inevitably be bringing home from preschool when he starts in January - the breathing of a laringo baby is bad enough without a cold/flu virus added in to the mix

Really hope your dd grows out if it soon and gets better quickly from all the nasty bugs.

So sorry, zonedout, have huge headcold myself now and forgot to check for replies

Thanks so much for taking time to answer, and I hope I didn't freak you out having a 2yr old with ongoing noisy breathing....its unusual for it to go on this long. I am making an ENT appointment for dd, but looks like it won't be until January .

We found/find a humidifier helped hugely with night time breathing, especially during colds, so if you can invest in one I recommend it with a laryngo baby; also, FWIW, I honestly don't think dd (apart from the one time she had bronchiolitis at 4 weeks old) is half as bothered by it all as we are - its known to be a high stress condtion for parents!

ps did they also tell you that laryngo babies are 80% likely to have reflux? WOrth knowing, so you can get meds as soon as it starts, if it starts - we found Domperidone and Ranitidine helped hugely, and she's been off both for at least six months
