Help! I NEED teething advice please! [desperate emoticon]

So DD (15 months) has been teething for 10 weeks with no signs of any coming through any time soon. It's two bottom front ones, two top canines and some molars. She is hardly sleeping and really grouchy. Last night she stayed awake almost all night kicking DP in the back and nuts () and scratching me. Since then she has had one cat nap. She's already been up once tonight and she only went to bed at 7!

So as you can see I'm pretty desperate for help. So far we've tried:

teething powders - not working anymore
anbesol liquid - only works for a short while
calpol - stops working after an hour
nurofen - same as calpol
cold things - not really practical in the middle of the night

Obviously as she's been teething for so long I'm trying not to give her too much pain relief, but she really needs it right now I think as she can't sleep for more than an hour. Anyone got any ideas? I've got cake...

medised worked well for us with ds1. We gave that at his bedtime, then a "dreamfeed" of ibuprofen when we went to bed!

CharChar - please accept my sincere sympathy. 10 weeks is a long time in anyone's book. I cannot see anything on the list that I have not tried either other than bonjella cool.

Could she be getting into a habbit now of not sleeping? I am sure she is in lots of pain too, please don't get me wrong but they do know how to play you these babies!

This weekend we stayed with relatives and DD decided (19 months) she did not want to settle in a strange room and an evil travel cot, fair enough. However, now we are back when I put her down into her cot she goes ballistic, I am having to be pretty firm as there is not much wrong other than the fact she knows on Saturday Mummy stayed and rocked her as Mummy felt guilty about the strange room and evil travel cot! I am hoping she will stop this soon as it is stretching my last nerve!

Have you tried any homeopathy? I know my SM swears but it for all sorts of ailments and you can get it for babies too?

CharCharGabor · 24/11/2008 20:06

I had thought of medised but you're not allowed to use it on under 2s now. Plus I think it'd probably have the opposite effect on my little livewire

I wondered if she could be playing me, but on the nights where she hasn't felt so bad or when the pain relief has worked she's slept a little while longer. She's had a cold as well so hasn't been on top form. I thought about homeopathy as my friend uses it on her son. But it's expensive and if it didn't work I'd be screwed!

Gah! I was hoping there was a magical product I hadn't heard of, like Teething Magic gel or something I might get the bonjela cool, anything's worth a try. The house is starting to look like a mini pharmacy!

Ooops! Why aren't you allowed to us it on under 2's? DS2 has had some (he's 6 months). We already had it in the house so I've not bought any recently

Bless. Just another thought, have you had the doctor take a look? I only say this as I have been treating DD for teething and what I thought was oral thrush (locum doc belived me and gave her meds) for a few weeks. Got her to a paediatric doc this weekend at an out of hours place and they finally managed to look down her throat and she has a bad case of tonsilitis!!! How bad did I feel?

I am sure there is someone on her with great advice, there always is. Hopefully now you are bumped up to the top someone will chip in.

In the meantime good luck! This too shall pass as they say!!

P.S. I use medised. There, I said it. But I don't give haribo or fruit shoots!! I am such a bad mother.......

CharCharGabor · 24/11/2008 20:13

A load of cough medicines etc. were banned in the under 2s last year, including Tixylix and medised. It was due to accidental overdose and inappropriate use of them I think.

oh well, he's had it now and I know full well not to give it with other paracetamol products. Will save it for very special occasions then!

BlueBumedFly · 24/11/2008 20:17

But if you are careful and stick to the correct dose then I do use it for very bad colds.

DD is very tall and I checked the weight chart and even at 2 years old she would still be on the 40th percentile so I must admit I go on weight and not age. She has tonsilitis at the moment and I am giving it to try to help with the endless stream of snot.

CharCharGabor · 24/11/2008 20:17

I don't think it's really that much of a problem as long as you use it responsibly, which obviously you both do. I'd rather only use it as a last resort atm.

That is an idea, taking her to the docs I mean. She's never been this bad with just teeth before. God I'll feel so guilty if there is something wrong with her.

CharChar I am sure she is fine but it might be worth a trip to rule out anything else.

I felt hideous though when the doc told me she had (and I quote) pustulating tonsils. For the love of mike!!! I trusted the doctor before that said she had oral trush, chances are she has had tonsilitis for 3 weeks or so! These things are sent to try us and after 2 days of a decent strength antibiotic she is looking better already.

CharCharGabor · 24/11/2008 20:26

DD had tonsilitis a few months ago so I feel for you. She only had a mild case though. I'll take her down to the doctors tomorrow. It's such a faff, she hates doctors touching her and screams the whole time we're there. I've never met another child with such skill at screaming with her mouth closed I would be quite relieved if it was something else, at least I could do something about it then. Thanks

Good luck. DD hates anyone looking in her mouth too. She does this amazing mmhhmhmhmhmhmhmmhm cry with her jaw firmly shut tight. This weekend when it all got a bit desperate I tickled her which made her open her mouth and the doc got in quick - DD was in a terrible temper with me after that!!

CharCharGabor · 24/11/2008 20:34

lol yeah that's what DD sounds like! I will try the tickling trick though Poor baby. She's been quiet for an hour or so now, long may it continue!

CharCharGabor · 24/11/2008 20:38
