Medised & Nurofen (8.5 month old)

DD has a cold and her temperature has been going up and down all day - have been controlling with Nurofen and Calpol.

She is in bed now and her temp is back to normal but her nose is super snotty. I've just given her Nurofen, if her snotty nose bothers her is it ok to give her Medised?

I've never given her Medised, is it really that potent?

I use medised with ds, 15m. It has a muscle relaxant or something in it, so I find it useful at bedtime when he's ill.
Although it says safe from 3 months on the box, they won't sell it to you if your child is under 2 because apparently it's easy to overdose on (don't see how personally).
Medised is paracetamol so should be safe alongside ibuprofen.

LeakyDAISYcal · 24/11/2008 18:59

the recommendations re medised changed earlier this year and it is now not meant for children under 2 years old; mainly to stop people from sedating their children to sleep.

I bought a bottle last Christmas when it still said "over 3 months" on the bottle and have used it for DD (now 18 months) on a few occasions.

I don't think it will clear a snotty nose though, the active ingredient is an antihistamine which will just make her sleepy.

Have you got any vicks, karvol or snufflebabe that you can put on a tissue by her pillow?

LeakyDAISYcal · 24/11/2008 19:00

and obviously give instead of the calpol!

littleboyblue · 24/11/2008 19:04

It still does say 3 months on the bottle.
Ds is snotty now and I've just been using vapour rub on chest and some karvol drops on hanky. He doesn't really have a temp so am not actually medicating him, but I have given medised if he's been having a rough night.

babyOcho · 24/11/2008 19:06

Does antihistamine have similar snot clearing properties?

HOw are you supposed to clear snot from a baby? She screams whenever she sees me coming towards her to wipe her nose or face.

Have put snufflebabe on her chest, may sneak in with it on a tissue as well in a bit.

Medised has an antihistamine in it to clear snotty noses and it does have a sedative effect, but mild. As it contains paracetamol, it is fine to give with nurofen, but just follow the instructions! HTH

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 24/11/2008 19:09

Anti-histamine widens teh airways...which compensates for the snot that clogs them.

Medised should not be used in under 2's though. Karvol/vicks/olbas + calpol will be much more effective.

BrummieMomInMerthyr · 24/11/2008 19:10

Sorry Leaky, didn't mean to repeat your post!!! Just scanning posts rather than properly reading them!

littleboyblue · 24/11/2008 19:10

Medised will not clear a stuffed nose.
If she's screaming when you wipe her nose, maybe it's a bit sore, try putting a bit of vasaline round it.
How about raising the mattress in her cot a bit to keep her head up?
I only give medised as a last resort, but paracetamol and ibuprofen doesn't seem to have an effect on ds and a runny nose.
You can buy suction things like they use at the hospital to clear the nose or use saline drops.

littleboyblue · 24/11/2008 19:11

Oh, I didn't realise the active ingredient widens airways. Silly me.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 24/11/2008 19:17

Not its major property TBH...not really what it is designed for when it was developed - just a happy bonus. There are much better airway wideners out there where required.

As you say it doesn't clear a blocked nose per se - so you weren't wrong- but it can help to compensate.

FeelingLucky · 24/11/2008 23:34

what about putting one of those humidifier things in her room if she has blocked up nose?

babyOcho · 25/11/2008 16:32

We put the humidifer thing on last night, not sure how much it helped. She was up from 3.45-5.30.

She appears to be much better today, not 100%, but I think on the mend.

Interested in this as DS has cold at the mo. We have a Karvol plug-in vapouriser which we put on at night and is great at keeping his breathing easier. I think it cost about £6 from the chemist. Makes my sinuses feel clear just standing in his room for a mo!

babyOcho · 26/11/2008 15:16

Thanks LLadybird, will pop into the chemist to check them out.

Medised has an antihistamine in it, I use only at night to help clear my Dd's snotty nose when needed, it seems to help a lot. I have since she was 4 months old,(has from 3 months on bottle) still have the same bottle (she's now 20 months)
Olbas oil on a muslin near the cot helps too, oh and raise the head end of the cot, i use Argos catalogues!
