Treatment for really REALLY bad nappy rash??

Hi,
DS2 (12 months) has really bad nappy rash - red raw & looks horribly sore. Usually I have found Sudocream or Metanium do the trick but not this time. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I am not sure but I am wondering if this is due to switching from formula to cows milk. Anyone know if that could be the case as well? No other signs of lactose intolerance & it's not something the rest of the family have (not sure if it is hereditary).
All suggestions most welcome.
Thank you!!

Do you give her weetabix?

Used top burn the skin off DSs bum - stopped the weetabix and hey presto rash went!

We found Tui Bee Balme to be a miracle cream.
No advice on diet I'm afraid.

I used nappy cream from Weleda for my DCs, it was always good. If very bad, then Bepathen cream is fabulous, I think that Boots stock it.

Have you started giving him juice?

Could he be teething?

MmeLindt · 24/11/2008 18:35

Sorry, Bepanthen cream

both dcs had REALLY bad nappy rash when they were teething, literally raw and broken skin. Just used sudocrem although it didn't help that much, left nappy off quite a bit and just dealt with the mess!

Oh it's miserable, isn't it... DS has had it several times, and it's ended up infected and needing cream from the dr - don't feel inhibited about taking your ds to the dr if it doesn't clear. I'd try keeping him without nappies as much as you possibly can for a day or so, and if it's no better then get it seen: nystaform has worked well for us, from dr.
Otherwise there are loads of suggestions on threads here:
egg white (paint on, let dry)
different oils/lubricants: vaseline, olive oil etc.
the creams: metanium, sudocreme, morhulin
stop using wipes, just use water, and perhaps make a soothing wipe solution from cold camomile tea
change as much as possible, nappy free time as much as possible

Oh, and I found putting camomile tea and a muslin full of oats in the bath v soothing for him when it was horrid - oats make the bath very soft and nice.

Hi If its been there for more than 3 days and the bum has little red bumps it may be fungal, a smear of canesten along with bepanthan and a huge dollop of sudocream clears my wee one's nappy rash up really quickly. Also agree with other posters about as much nappy free time as possible and making sure his bums is dried after cleaning.

Hi,
Firstly thank you v much for all the replies!
He used to eat Weetabix but a few wks ago he decided that they weren't for him & now has porridge. No, doesn't get juice, just water (which he's not too interested in) & milk.
Yes, def think teething (unfort for him they seem to come through in batches) but this is still really bad nappy rash, also prob should have mentioned slightly loose stools.
Jennysbean, he's now fast asleep so will wait 'til the morning, but I think that perhaps some of the outer area might be bumpy, the area around his anus (sorry if too much info!) is just red raw. So maybe he will need to go to the dr's, thanks for the tip.
Littlefrog, like the idea of the oats, had forgotten about that (remember my mum used to use it for my sister & me obviously many years ago!)
Thank you all again!
