Very Mild Chicken Pox

Has anyone elses child had a very mild dose of chicken pox?

My DD is 6, and came home from school last thursday with some spots. Took her to the Dr on the friday, who confirmed it as CP and said she would probably erupt over the weekend.

instead though, no more spots appeared (she has a max of 15 in total!) By saturday, all the spots had crusted over. I kept her off school on the monday, but she was totally well and the pots were all well 7 truly crusted and starting to fade.

Now, another 12 or so kids in her year group have it, an dthey have all been off for over a week!

did i send her back too soon? maybe it wasnt chicken pox? Or was it just very mild, and can she get it again??

sorry, im just a bit confused!

Sounds much like when my dd had chicken pox. I did keep her off for a week to be on the safe side (as not many others at the school had it) but tbh she was only noticeably ill for about a day if that, and not many spots at all. I was counting my lucky stars as her friend she caught it from was off for about a fortnight and spotty, itchy and miserable for most of the time.

She hasnt even been remotely ill, not before spots or while she had them. On fact, i swear she is more hyper if anything!

We had this with DS and he had molloscum contagious - sort of like chicken pox - same virus anyway - look here:

here

Doctor said was chicken pox but it wasn't!

JerricaBenton · 22/11/2008 19:10

I dont think its that, as my DD1 had that as a small child and these spots are much bigger? Thanks though x

I think that there is a small risk of her getting it again, but its unlikely. I wasn't poorly with chickenpox as a child and my dd who is being bf has been exposed to it twice and not got it so I assume I'm still immune. I had mumps as a child and wasn't very ill with that either. I have to be very run down before I catch anything these days, hopefully your dd is like me and just doesn't get very ill.

BigBadMouse · 22/11/2008 19:24

My DD2 had a very mild dose as did another DC at her nursery. The other DC has since had it again, my DD2 hasn't (yet).

JerricaBenton · 22/11/2008 19:25

she has never had any illness (apart from excema/asthma, but thats not "catching"). Ive exposed her to CP quite a lot, taken her to play with poxy kids etc, and this is the 1st time she actually caught it!

As far as I'm aware (or my Mum) I have never had CP. But now all 3 of my kids have had it and I still haven't got it. Can only guess that I must be immune which means I must have it mildly as a child. If it was def CP -as far as I know you can't get it again. Hopefully your DD has just been one of the lucky ones Apparently, you can even get just 1 spot. My DS just had it about 6 weeks ago age 15 months - he was covered - glad its over with tho

JerricaBenton · 27/11/2008 17:54

Anyone know how longthe incubation period is? Have been waiting for baby DS to catch it from DD, but it has been exactly 2 weeks now, is his time up?

I ask because MIL is having chemo and cant be round the children if they are infectious, and she is eager to see the dc again!

The incubation period is 1 - 3 weeks so I am afraid you have not given your son long enough to catch it yet!

FWIW, none of my children were ill as such when they had CP, and when I had it as a child, I only had 3 spots altogether.

JerricaBenton · 27/11/2008 18:16

Thank you. Will have to wait a little longer then!

Did you ever get it again?

ds had chicken pox for a second time a couple of weeks ago. He had it as a toddler quite mildly. Dr said it is rare to get it twice but not impossible . ds was sent home on the Wednesday and went back to school on the Monday when spots had scabbed. He wasn't particularly unwell, just a bit pale and snotty

DisasterArea · 27/11/2008 18:19

i only had one pox. wasn't ill at all and have never got it again. the DDs both had it really really nastily.

DumbledoresGirl · 27/11/2008 18:21

Not had it again so far!

2 of my children were literally covered from head to toe in spots but were not ill as such. From my experience, the number of spots does not seem to have much to do with how the child feels.

Niecie · 27/11/2008 18:26

DS2 didn't have very many spots and I ended up taking him to the out of hours docs as I was carrying with normal life and thinking he was fine, when it occurred to me he might not be and was spreading it everywhere.

The docs there said that if you have more than 10 spots you are unlikely to get it again. I don't know how accurate that guess would be but DS had 25 so I am wary about him getting it again. However, he has been exposed several times since then and has been OK.

Spoo · 27/11/2008 18:35

Both my DSs had very mild versions maybe 10 / 12 spots. I even tried to expose a friend's child to it (on her mother's request) and her daughter came out with it the following day - so even though she can't have got it from mine - mine should have caught it off her if it wasn't CP already. THey have had numerous outbreaks at nursery and mine haven't got it then. When people ask whether they have had CP - I say 'I think so' People think your mad!!

Joannesp1 · 23/09/2018 10:45

Hi my 8 year daughter came out in spots on her back Friday morning I took her to doctors who said it was start of chicken pox. Since then she has only got a couple more again on her back and is well in herself. I'm confused do I need to keep her off school tomorrow?

Random18 · 23/09/2018 11:34

If all the spots have scanned over then she can go back to school.
If some are at blister stage still or new ones coming then keep her off.

Random18 · 23/09/2018 11:34

*scabbed

Joannesp1 · 23/09/2018 13:15

None have scabs at the minute she doesn't have loads of spots and mainly on her back I always thought chicken pox spread all over?

Random18 · 23/09/2018 22:56

Is it definitely CP? Are the blisters? With my DD there was no mistaking that’s what it was. If they are not scabbed over then you need to keep home tomorrow as still contagious.

Joannesp1 · 24/09/2018 08:14

Yes definitely blisters she has come out with another spot overnight which has blister on it x

BarbarianMum · 24/09/2018 17:34

Ds1 had 10 spots (yes 1 counted) and was perfectly well throughout. He passed them to ds2 who was literally covered in spots and properly poorly for several days.
