Anyone know about Amoxycillin?

Ds1 has had that sickness bug that's doing the rounds, along with a temperature and complaining that most things taste yuck when he tries to eat.
I've been alternating Calpol and Neurofen and he seemed to be on the mend.
However he was up in the night complaining of the dark and also that his ear hurt and after some Neurofen went back to bed, eventually.
He's woken up this morning complaining that his ear hurts so I have a feeling he's now got an ear infection.
He also had a tooth ache the other week which the dentist gave him Amoxycillin for but he refused to take it so it's still in the fridge.
I've given him some Calpol but am also wondering whether to start giving him the Amoxycillin aswell or whether I should take him up the hospital if it's still hurting later or will they also just give me the same medicine for his ear?
Thanks.

Amoxycillin probably does taste yuk(DS wouldn't touch it) but it sounds like your DS needs it. I got it down DS by mixing it with yogurt and sugar.

How old is he? I'm presuming the dentist thinks he has a tooth infection - which could also feel like ear ache.

Do you think that the toothache has spread across his face if he's not been taking his medication?

They normally have to be thrown away after 4 weeks, how long have you had it?

take him to hospital to get a look in. could be tooth abscess and the pain feels like it is in the ear.

btw, not sure if it is the penicillin family (which amoxicillin is one) or the tetracycline family which should not be taken with dairy products because they inhibit the absorption. enquire from the prescribing doctor or chemist.

Amoxycillin is a good all round AB imo
but I would be careful and make sure it hasn't been made up too long and that it has been stored correctly.
could you not ring the out of hours doctor, they will most likely either see him of fax a new prescription through to a chemist.

you can have dairy with Amoxycillin

You can use ammoxycillin for an ear infection however, as it is probably coming from his tooth I would be inclined to take him back to the dentist when he's finished the course incase he needs some more.

Check how long you have had it too.

Thanks. The date on the prescription is 31st Oct,so it's 3 weeks old but been in the fridge so I'm assuming it's still ok.
I've just given him a dose of it and will give another 2 during the course of the day.If no better in the morning then I'll ring the out of hours service.
He's 3 and we took him to the dentist as he was complaining of toothache. The dentist looked and said it was his back teeth coming through but he hasn't complained of toothache since.Infact the day of the dentist appointment he said the toothache had gone.

both my DC are on Amoxicillin at the mo to treat their ear infection. I've just looked and on the bottle it says 'use within 14 days of preparation'!!!!
Yours was made up over three weeks ago, so if I was you, I'd stop using it straightaway!
Ours are banana flavoured - the kids cannot get enough of it.

I would not use the amoxil if it hasn't been prescribed for that condition. If your worried get him seen. My dd had an ear infection a few weeks ago.... i managed it with pain relief, the antibiotics are for bacterial infections only and most ear infections are viral. Many gp's prescribed ab's when it's not entirely necessary, it just makes the parent feel better.. Most viral ear infections will clear themselves in a week anyway. The important thing is to manage the pain during this acute stage. Give regular calpol and neurofen, give it as often as you can to maintain background pain relief.

I only give mine ab's if it's really necessary..
