MY DS is almost 5. He has been clean day and night since 2.
He started school in September and wouldnt poo there. Big poos at home caused bleeding and a tear. The GP said just germolene.. He was upset and stopped going.. We used a suppository on pharmacists advice and syrup of figs. This cleared him but gave him the runs and a very sore bottom from all the wiping. We saw the Doc again who prescribed an ointment..
suddenly his pants were getting soiled, accidents were happening and we caught him going rigid, crossing his legs. This has affected him badly and he is often grumpy or hot when he needs to go.
The Doc says if we do nothing it will get better...We tried but couldnt stand it, so gave him lactulose.
He then started going 15 to 20 times when he came home from school.
We stopped the lactulose and now he is down to about 6 x a day but only does little amounts and it is always between his legs (sorry TMI!!) He has started locking the door and when we open it we see he is stood up, crossed legs! He says he is scared it will hurt.
Other times he says he cant poo anymore.
His pants are often dirty...
I cant believe all this has happened after 4 years no problems. He loves school and is articulate and sensible other than this issue.
Any advice to get him better?????

Hi - dont worry I think problems like this are fairly common. My dd (4) has had the same thing.

She became constipated after not eating properly for a few days (excitment as we had been visiting relatives) and had a tear similar to your sons. This then led to problems of withholding poo and not wanting to go.

We kept explaining to her that she would have to go - that everyone poos etc... Spent hours sitting on the loo reading books, talking, bribery (promise of chocolates for every poo done). Sounds looney now I come to write it down. To be honest my patience didnt always hold as she was making herself extremely uncomfortable and we had a few accidents as well.

In the end perserverance paid off. We have a routine now of going to the loo before bath in the evening when she does a poo and is congratulated for doing one - lots of fuss and praise. (this has led to embarassing situations when she announces to everyone in a packed restaurant that she has just done a big poo!) But it works and she is going regularly now.

So I am afraid I dont have any easy solutions other than patience and lots of reassurance and praise. And to know that you are not alone. Hope this helps.
