Other causes for non-fading rash? Not going to panic

My dh has just taken 8 yo dd to a and e on doctors advice, she has developed a v dense rash on her arm, like a bruise almost, dark reddy purple but it's not a bruise. did the glass test and it doesn't fade at all. Surgery said it's usual that the rash doesn't come til the child is shwoing more symptoms, dd seems fine, so telling myself it's nothing, but can't seem to find more explanations for a rash of this type. would appreciate any experience as trying not to go down the line of thinking it could be M. She has also deceloped a different type of rash on her neck that is spreading, like an allergic reaction rash, not at all like this one but could poss be linked?

mhd....i have no advice at all, but wanted to say try not to panic...
when there was quite a few menningitis scares a few years ago, i was in charge of a nursery...i was paranoid as hell! my paramedic friend was adament that a child with meningitis is a very poorly child indeed, and even if you didn't know what they had, it would be very clear that they were poorly...
hth hope your dd is ok. x

I don't know much about this but I hope your daughter is fine - I'm sure it's a good sign that she's fine in herself at the moment.

When my ds was investigated for a non-blanching rash a few years ago we did read a poster in the assessment room that talked about septicaemia rather than meningitis, and I think it may have said that the rash could then appear without a temperature - I think that was why they were investigating it even though he seemed so well. They took blood for tests and kept him in for a while to observe how the rash evolved (he really only had a lot of pinpricks though, and they put it down to a viral thing in the end - he was fine).

I do hope you hear soon that your daughter is fine, but I would guess that even if she stays feeling quite well there's a good chance they'll send off blood to a lab and want to keep an eye on her for a while, so unless there's a really obvious other cause for her rash it would be as well to be prepared for her having to stay overnight.

Thanks Melly and actic. Yes I'm holding on to the fact that she seems her usual self. I can't go in myself as I have a nasty chest infection and looking after ds who is going down with something too. Just waiting to hear from dh, but know it could be hours.

How's she doing?

madhairday · 20/11/2008 19:27

Still not sure. She's been seen by a couple of docs in a&e who seem perplexed by it and have now sent her to a paediatrician at the other hospital. waiting to hear back from dh. But apparently they didn't seem too worried as she is well. So still holding onto that - I guess they have to check these things out properly.

When ds1 was about 8 months he had a non-blanching pinprick rash over his legs. GP said she was pretty sure it wasn't meningitis but to go to a&e. Spent the weekend there. He had blood tests & urine tests and in the end they decided it was viral. They didn't have a clue to start with and kept us in as they were worried he would show other meningitis symptoms.
Hope she's home soon.

any news this morning? hope you're ok! x

Thankfully all is well. They were kept in for hours but not overnight, several doctors wanted to see her as they could not work it out, it had the marks of a meningitis rash but as she had no other symptoms and was bouncing around being her usual self they knew it could not be that. In the end they just called it a traumatic rash and said she coould come straight in anytime in the next 24 hrs if she displays any symptoms, but in the meantime to send her to school and go on as normal. Rash still there this am, bit spread but not badly and not anywhere else. So thankful all is OK, in these cases you can't help worrying can you.
