If you haven't been punched in the nose, what other reasons are there to have a nosebleed?

Does he pick it?

whoops · 20/11/2008 08:04

my ds (7) tends to have nosebleeds because he is putting a finger up there
I used to get random nosebleeds when I was younger but don't know why

TrinityRhino · 20/11/2008 08:04

no she doesn't pick it
she woke up, went to the loo and then came running tn to me saying she was scared cause her nose was bleeding

she has never had a nosebleed before and she is not very good with blood

has sher had a cold recently? Sneezing and blowing your nose can put a strain on the blood vessels making it easier to have a nose bleed.

Some people are more prone to them then others. Generally nothing to worry about.

belgo · 20/11/2008 08:06

never had a nose bleed before? That's very unusual, most children have had them by the age of 8.

TrinityRhino · 20/11/2008 08:07

oh so nothing to worry about
I always thought that some peope are more prone than others but I would have thought that she would have had one by now is she was going to be prone iyswim

babble babble

thanks everyone

I have never had a nose bleed, neither have my dc's

Some people do have weaker bloodvessels at the back of the nose which makes them prone.

belgo · 20/11/2008 08:12

I got them all the time as a child, still wake up now most mornings with a small amount of blood in my nose.

Mostly it's nothing to worry about. Tell her to sit down, leaning forward slightly (so the blood doesn't go down into her stomach) and pinch the front of the nose with a tissue.

southeatsastras · 20/11/2008 08:14

DS(7) gets them, can be worse in winter because of the central heating.

belgo · 20/11/2008 08:14

good point southeastastra, central heating can dry out the nose.

teenspirit · 20/11/2008 08:20

Nothing to worry about just a burst blood vessel very common. sit them down lean them forward and pinch the bottom of the nose for at least 15 min you can apply ice to the bridge as wellbut what ever you do don't let go till the 15 min is up or it might start again. They can look vile but really are nothing to worry about - if the bleeding doesn't stop and you have pinched the bottom of the nose closed for 15 min a couple of times and it's still gushing then go to a and e and they'll stop it for you.

TrinityRhino · 20/11/2008 08:23

thanks for the reassurance
