5mo DD blocked up with cold and trouble breathing at night - any tips?

She had the worst of the cold about 2-3 weeks ago but is still very snotty and has loads of catarrgh (I think thats how you spell it!!) She rattles and coughs and splutters all day, only naps until her cough wakes her, and is grumpy most of the time
If tried lots of tips including Karvol, steamy room, raising the head of the bed slightly to help the drainage from her airways but she's still waking up a few hours after going to bed and screaming because she can't breath. I ended up with her sleeping in my chest upright last night
Any wondertips out there??

My symphaties to you. We are going thru a patch of colds as well. DH and I seem to have it worse than DD (6 months old) but what we found really helpful for her snotty nose was the nasal aspirator. It is a long tube which you place one end into her nostril and you suck from the other end to get rid of the mucus. You can buy it from most pharmacies. Sometimes DD wakes up crying because her nose is blocked and that really seems to help clear it up. HTH.

We have been using a vaporiser (sp) for the dd's, it has kept them clearer at night, also prop his matress up so he's not lying flat.
When dd2 had it at this age she spent one night asleep in her carseat (not in the car).

Olbas Oil for children is good (you can buy it in Boots) - put a couple of drops on a tissue and leave it (our of reach) in your dd's room at night. You can also buy nasaldrops to help release any blockages (I could nevr get the nose sucker thing to do anything worthwhile) which makes them sneeze out the snot.

Have you tried saline drops up her nose?

Poledra · 20/11/2008 12:33

I put the tissue with the Olbas Oil on it underneath the cot sheet.

raise the head end of the cot so she is a little more upright rather than laying flat.( yellow pages under the legs etc.. you can actually get things to do this.. but I found yellow pages worked well.

BCNS · 20/11/2008 12:37

ooops sorry read you have already done that

Olbas Oil and nasal drops work here. Hope she feels better soon.
