god i am not sure. we had the same in our house last night/

i took dd6 to gp this morning. came out with inhalers. We used to use these 2 yrs back, and dd is always susceptible to coughs.

I actually bought some cough med there and then, and the woman didn't say anything about it.

I know you have to be careful with Ibuprophen or asprin and asthma.

Is your dc on inhalers?

Nemowith3and1tobe · 17/11/2008 12:19

never had a problem with dd1 and she is asthmatic. How old is ds2? they will usually only give a simple linctus type cough medicine but no issues.

cheesesarnie · 17/11/2008 12:20

yep hes on salbutamol and fluticasone.

hes 3 in december.ive not had problem before.the shop assistant got the pharamist who said they are not allowed to sell cough medicine to asthmatic children incase its not a cough and its asthma getting worse or whatever!

Nemowith3and1tobe · 17/11/2008 12:21

just looked on your profile that he is same age as dd1. Suppose it depends on the pharmacist.
Is there a medicine you have used before that you could purchase?

IllegallyBrunette · 17/11/2008 12:22

I find Medised is the best thing to stop mine coughing.

piratecat · 17/11/2008 12:23

thats just paracetamol then nut?

cheesesarnie · 17/11/2008 12:25

i said what hed had before but they refused to sell it to me

OP posts:
Nemowith3and1tobe · 17/11/2008 12:27

how odd.
I know they can definetly have buttercup syrup as there is nothign in it. Think dd1 also uses benilyn but we had to test it when she was well iykwim.

cheesesarnie · 17/11/2008 12:32

it was benilin he had before(i think).

maybe i looked dodgy?(should have left the vodka outside).
oh well trip to gp later hopefully-they said if they can fit him in.hes supposed to have flu jab on thursday so hope hes ok by them.wont be if i cant get any medicine in him.

OP posts:
IllegallyBrunette · 17/11/2008 12:35

Nemowith3and1tobe · 17/11/2008 12:36

we have had to put off dd1s flu jab due to a bad cough at the min..although feel we are teetering on edge of hospital trip yet again

cheesesarnie · 17/11/2008 12:44

I think there is an ingredient in a lot of chesty cough medicines that can make asthmatic symptoms worse. Dd1 (2.8, has asthma) has Tixylix baby syrup which is just glycerol, and it can sometimes help a bit. I think Medised often helps, but partly because it makes her drowsy. Otherwise, we just have to keep her upright.

cheesesarnie · 17/11/2008 13:23

thanks.

nemo i feel for you, i am wondering smae with dd atm.

she's really poorly but gp has adi we must give the brown )steroid) inhaler a chance to help.

IB, i never knew that about Medised, I thoughtit was just another name for the paracetamols on sale. I just got big bottle of Medinol, and assumed it was the same as medised, calpol.

I have Benedryl allergy med here, must have the same ingredient in it as Medinol.

cheesesarnie · 18/11/2008 10:13

finally got ds to gp lastnight.gp was outraged that chemist wouldnt sell us anything!he said 'theyre getting worse'!apparently he cant prescribe cough medicine but there was no reason they couldnt give us any.by this time chemist was shut so ended up buying tixylix in garage!.so my poor little boy was coughing all day but could have had something!grrrr

Lenlen · 18/11/2008 11:29

some cough medicines doesn't work and might even make the cough worse if a child has asthma aside from cough. better check it with your pedia.

cheesesarnie · 18/11/2008 13:22

whats a 'pedia'?

We have been told not to give cough medicine to our asthmatic boys. Basicaly because the cough is the body's way of getting rid of the bugs. By suppressing the cough, the germs are not being expelled. Children with asthma will have more mucus in their airways, especially during a cold, and by the cough being suppressed, the chances of a chest infection are increased.

In turn, chest infections are again more severe for asthmatics.

Recently, we were also told not to give medised by our specialist asthma nurse for the same reason - that it suppresses the cough. We have been told only to give calpol now.

cheesesarnie · 27/11/2008 22:13

thats interesting!

nappyaddict · 27/11/2008 22:16

of course a gp can prescribe cough medicine. why the hell wouldn't they be able to? ours does all the time.

nappyaddict · 28/11/2008 18:52

mumto3boys - i thought cough medicine loosens the phlegm (sp??) therefore making them cough up more of the germs rather than stopping them coughing?

We use tixylix chesty coughs. On the back it says helps loosen catarrh to make coughs more productive and breathing easier.

What about the linctus and glycerine type medicines that are very basic? Do they advise against giving those aswell?
