Noticed dd has been blinking a lot recently...

and it's quite exaggerated.

I thought it was maybe because she was tired, but she's doing it a lot more during the day.

I don't think there is anything wrong with her eyesight because she appears to see things clearly.

I just wanted to see if this is common, or whether I should be concerned about it before I make appointment to see GP.

Thanks folks

How old is she?
DS1 is 3 and he went through a phase of this. Lasted a couple of months and then he stopped.
He's on a phase of clearing his throat loudly and often now though lol

AnarchyAunt · 17/11/2008 09:43

DD (5.6) was doing this a while ago. We worked out it was a nervous tic, and after a few weeks of completely ignoring it, she stopped.

How old is she? It coincided with starting fulltime school for DD, is anything big going on for her maybe?

Macdog · 17/11/2008 09:45

She's nearly 3
Was hoping that it was just a thing that children do.
I'm a first time mum and didn't want to make a fuss if it's a common thing

Thanks

Ds went through a phase of this (at about 3.5) - we had his eyes checked out and there was nothing wrong. He has largely stopped now, except ocassionally when he is very, very tired.

Macdog · 17/11/2008 09:51

This is why I love MN.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I think she's maybe just found a new fun way of looking at things

My dd also began to do this aged around 3 and a half. She seemed to do it more when tired but it also became a habit. We ignored it and eventually she stopped.

chopchopbusybusy · 17/11/2008 09:52

DD2 did this when she was about 9. We took her to the optician for an eye test and hasn't done it since. LOL at 2.4 kids DS's throat clearing!

AnarchyAunt · 17/11/2008 09:59

We've had throat clearing too

And head shaking, and hair twiddling.

I was just about to post a question on this very thing - DS1 is 6 and has been doing this on and off for the past year but it's much more pronounced now. Seems to happen when he gets nervous or worried - like if he's just been naughty, for eg. Guess I'll hold off from the GP for a while and ignore it.

alittlebitshy · 17/11/2008 10:30

I posted some similar threads earlier in the year.

My dd who is 5 started doing that, then it changed to a head jerking, then to a puffng her chest out thing.... but I learnt (v v v v v hard) to chill and ignore it. telling her to stop, or worrying about it was not helping anyone.

As everyone has said I think it is just one of those things that children do.... I think it can happen when they're anxious or concerned (it stopped over the summer hols) but I gather it's not caused by stress, but stress exacerbates it rather.

DumbledoresGirl · 17/11/2008 10:34

My dd (now aged 8 but I think she was 7 when I first noticed) does this. It particularly seemed to be when she was watching television so I thought she was having difficulty seeing it. I took her to the optician but her eye sight was fine and she has had it checked again (now going to have regular 6 monthly appts) and it was still fine. We have decided it is an affectation, but maybe worth getting your dd's eyes checked, just in case?

Macdog · 17/11/2008 13:28

Thanks everyone for the feedback

Will take dd to get eyes checked to be on safe side.

dd started with blinking moved to nail biting then to constant sniffing then on to twitching her nose, then pressing the side of her nose with her finger to sucking air in through the side of her mouth. she's 8 and to be honest I'm waiting for the blinking to come back round again.
the more you ignore it the faster it goes away. Can you tell that I find ignoring it hard.

thequietone · 17/11/2008 13:36

Ignore it. My DS1 did it around his second year. He's now 3.9 and did it one day last week. He was old enough for me to ask what he's doing. He is experimenting with sight (he also likes to try walking with his eyes shut). Yes, I get through a lot of Arnica cream at the moment...
