Ds is 9months old, has generally been very healthy, only had one cold, but that was just before his first two teeth popped through, so maybe teething?!?!

Was moany yesterday - again v unusual as normally laughing all day.. today was ok, had lunch then only had short nap, about half hour, when he normally sleeps for 3 hours.. woke up and did not eat his dinner, just went red and kept moaning..

Took temp and was 103.4.. gave Calpol, and after an hour seemed to go down to 98, can it reduce that quickly????
Very snotty and chesty cough..

Any advice welcome, now asleep, snoring more loudly than DH!

I spent yesterday at the Out of Hours clinic with a snotty, coughing 7 month old with a high temperature and a rash on his back and front. While we were there it moved up his neck then across his neck and face...poor baby.

It was a virus - we are now on day 4 - he is getting a little better and starting to eat a little.

detsy · 16/11/2008 23:12

Good to know - it's nice actually that they are welcoming with babies. Mind you my last out of hours panic was on christmas day last year as my very new baby had started with reflux and it scared the living dalights out of me.

A year between visits is not too bad I guess!

Good to talk to you ladies, i'm off for more restful night, I hope!

Sleep tight
x

Snap bookswapper - not nice is it but DD on mend like your DS - hopefully you'll have a better night too.

Maybe there should be a virus watch thread so we all know whats going round next!

treedelivery · 16/11/2008 23:17

dd now in my bed with her temp of 38.9 and mucus explosions.

Night night all! MAybe I'll sleep in the next life. bless the babies.

rodgershawk · 17/11/2008 09:51

Thanks everyone for the advice.
His temp went down then up then down again, starting to go up again now. His face is bright red, pretty sure its aggravated his eczema..
He was up most of night.. as TD says maybe Ill sleep in the next life..

Off to docs this morning, they are fitting me in at the end of surgery.

Poor LO - I hope the GP is able to help/advise (and they can also prescribe ibuprofen to save you buying it )

rodgershawk · 17/11/2008 13:00

He saw doc and basically has a bad cold. He had a temperature but his chest/breathing checked out ok.
She recommended carrying on with the Calpol. I asked about Nurofen and she said she didnt believe in it, she said it can upset their stomach especially with the mucus going down there too.. She said they used to recommend alternating between Nurofen and Calpol but they are not allowed to anymore!! Goalposts and all that!
He has finally gone down for nap and is refusing all lumpy food, so back a stage for us. At least he ate his yogurt so not all bad..

Oh FGS - goalposts moving so fast it is unbelievable!

Nurofen can upset their stomachs, true, but that is better than an out-of-control temp, surely?... and I know my friend who is a neo-natal specialist does the alternating thing with her DC

Glad your LO is OK, anyway.

BoffinMum · 17/11/2008 17:29

Glad he checked out OK at the doctor's. And
I am glad you got some yoghurt in him. That will help.

A bit odd about the Nurofen ... a bit of an upset tummy is better than a febrile convulsion, surely?? What degree of upset tummy are we talking about here??

rodgershawk · 17/11/2008 17:36

I know, needless to say I stopped off at Pharmacy and bought some Calprofen!!
Poor thing looks like he has been dragged through a hedge backwards, his eyes are puffy and red and the eczema on his face has really flared up..

Going to try some milk in an hour with some of the Calprofen and fingers crossed get some sleep!

Poor little sausage.

What did the pharmacy say about Medised for a 9-month old? The antihistamine in it might help settle the worst excesses of the eczema and the puffy eyes. You might be able to get it on prescription if the GP thinks along these lines too, or perhaps liquid Piriton would work instead? (Good to have in the house anyway, for when he gets chicken pox!!)

With all of this stuff, if you talk to the Pharmacist and read the labels v v carefully you won't go too far wrong. Pharmacists sometimes know more about drugs than doctors.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 17/11/2008 18:06

Liquid Piriton not suitable for under 12m.

Medised cannot be sold for use with a child under 2. If the GP felt it necessary he could have prescribed an anti-histamine. I have never heard of them doing that though for a cold. They would give beta-agonists or other broncho-dilators if necessary - I have never heard of them giving anti-histamines.

rodgershawk · 17/11/2008 19:24

I did mention his eczema, it was hard to miss anyway, and doc said its normal for it to flare up when stressed.
Gave him his bath and covered him in his cream which seems to have helped a bit.
He has just had about 3 oz milk which should see him through the night, hopefully!
Going to stick to the Calpol and Coprofen and hope it gets better. His nose is running like a tap!
Didnt know about liquid Piriton with chicken pox!

I didn't until the third one of mine had it! Made him a lot more comfortable. He was about 2 when he had it, though.

stealthsquiggle · 17/11/2008 22:52

Piriton can be prescribed under 12 months (I know, DS had it) but shouldn't be used without doctor's advice
