Hi,

DS has a mild hearing loss in both ears, and on Friday he got hearing aids.

He doesn't talk at all (he's two on Wednesday) and has GDD.

We are not getting on at all well with the HAs, he screams and cries when we try to put them in, and they come unhooked all the time. IF that doesn't happen he pulls them out.

He is just miserable (and so are we...)

We are thinking what's the point.

I know it's only really early days, but we're really down about them.

I'd love to hear some positive stories please...

Thx

My nephew has profound hearing loss - diagnosed as a newborn and worn hearing aids since about 4 weeks. He is 2.6 now. His speech is nearly normal with his twin sister and cousins, just the enunciation (sp?) isn't quite as good. He went through a phase of being a pickle with the aids, pulling them out etc etc but overall he realises they connect him to the world so actually cries for them if they aren't in - I expect your DS will take a while to adjust as he's older to be getting them for the first time, but in time he'll realise they help. Also, and I say this as someone fitted with HA's as an adult - they can be scary to begin with - hearing sounds you haven't heard before can be disorientating and overwhelming and take a while to get used to. That's hard enough to rationalise as an adult, let alone for a two year old! So give him time, maybe only encourage him to wear them for a short period each day and gradually lengthen the amount of time? Also, it's completely normal for them to keep coming unhooked - that's just the way it's going to be with an active little boy - you just get used to re-hooking them and now any friends or family who happen to notice DN's aids unhooked we just hook it back over. It will get better - if you've ever had a new pair of glasses, a new filling, a new haircut - anything that feels "weird" to begin with, it's just like that, it takes time to adjust.
