Just noticed DD has a 'lazy' eye

We've been seeing it several times over the last few days. Have never noticed before. She's 21 months and always banging her head - has she had a brain injury?

I suppose I'll get her into the Drs this week to get it checked, but just wanted to know what the possibilities are.

Don't know if this is any use .... my ds2 had what I thought was a slightly 'lazy' eye. Looked as though it had a slightly delayed reaction. He was having a hearing test and the audiologist noticed it to (he was 2.6yrs). She referred him with a left divergent squint.

The Eye hospital said his eye sight was perfect and that he was broad across the eyes and this sometimes gave the impression that the eyes were not 'working' together. All eye checks since then have been normal.

I have since heard of several children who had same dx.

DD was 5 yesterday and was diagnosed with a squint last week. She was tested at school and referred to the hospital.

I felt really guilty as I only noticed over the last few weeks that she looks cross eyed watching tv. There were no other signs of any problems with her sight but looking back I remember her blinking loads at about 2.5 which I thought was just a 'habit'.

The hospital have said the earlier they pick it up the better (before 7 is can be corrected). DD needs glasses to get the squint eye working and to help her short-sightedness which was caused by the squint. She is extremely excited about collecting her glasses later this week and she is also hoping for patches! BTW, if one child has a squint the sibling is also more likely to have one.

My son was referred to hospital between 2 1/2 as the GP felt he had a squint. It turned out he had something else but stayed being checked by the optomitrist until he went to school.

I wouldn't bother with the HV tbh, I would ask the GP for a referral.

My son has been at the hospital since under 1 due to family history. All are fine, squint free, but I have one.

Can I just add...

I'e had a squint all my life and have had various ops but by far the most amazing thing I ever embarked on was BOTOX for it!

It won't be appropriate until she's older, but boy does it work to level up the eyes

LargeGlassofRed · 24/11/2008 20:54

redybrek my dd had botox at 5 months and 1 yr too!
they inject it into the eye muscle to relax it and bring it more central.

Really Red???

How did they keep her still/free from discomfort??

LargeGlassofRed · 25/11/2008 20:21

They did it under general redybrek, thank goodness.
think its quite a new thing though that they were trailing at the local hospital.

Just to confuse me, DD has now started to cross her eyes deliberately to make us all laugh Though the squint is definitely there when she has to focus on something.
