Molluscum Contagious - anyone elses child had this?

Because DS has it on his trunk and leg - it is awful - he itches it so it spreads but he has excema so it is very hard to stop him itching totally.

Looks awful and I don't think it is painful but it is itchy and they are still spreading!

The doctor has said that it will just take 2 years to clear up and we just have to wait it out.

Any ideas guys?

Watching this as DS has had it on his neck for 6 months now. Am hoping that it doesn't spread onto his face I have read on here that Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is meant to be good for it (yes really!!) but haven't tried it. There are some homeopathic remedies that I have also read about but again not got round to buying

My DD1 had it. She also had eczema. It took a couple of years to go away but she hasn't had a single one since (that was ?7 or 8 years ago).

I found if I creamed them with her eczema cream they weren't quite so itchy.

LadyPenelope · 15/11/2008 09:54

My DD and my DS both have it at the moment. DD on her knees and DS on his tummy. They both got it earlier this year.

Our doctor said not much can be done. It will go away in 18 months or so, and then they won't get again as they will have immunity.
She said only other option was burning them off but since my DD also suffers from eczema she did not recommend because they will go of their own accord.

Agree they aren't very nice to look at and it does seem to itch. The important thing is that if they do itch the top off or they pop, you must wash hands and disinfect so they don't spread. Easier said than done of course.

apparently if you squeeze them (yuk) they go, and they start going. also lemon oil i think works. my boss' daughter had it and it went quickly after freezing. my friend's kids had it and she squeezed them. They went. It is contagious, according to my HV.

needmorecoffee · 15/11/2008 10:09

ds1 had it. It goes away by itself.

LIZS · 15/11/2008 10:09

yup , this is about the 3rd thread in as many months including mine - dd has them on arm and torso. Sudocrem seems to be drying them up and Aveeno for the itching.

DoubleBluff · 15/11/2008 10:20

Clean towels after every bath to stop reinfection and clean pyjams too.
I used a hemp oil cream which helped.
It is horrible tho.

My 8 year old had them about two years ago when he was six. They started on his right arm and then started spreading. I took him to the Dr but they just told me to let it run its course. However I did some research and found a product called Molluscum No More from the following company www.forces-of-nature.org. My son suffers from exczema but the product stated it was organic and all natural.

Within 4 weeks they had all gone and when I started the treatment it was starting to spread onto the other arm and trunk of his body. Basically after about a week it started to make the white core 'pop' out (admittedly with a bit of assistance) but as the core was coming out anyway there was little discomfort for my son.

I'm not sure if the actual spots itch but DS1 has v v v dry skin and outbreaks of eczema so he sctaches an awful lot anyway which is the worst thing as that is what causes it to spread.

MadameCastafiore · 15/11/2008 10:54

Right will give the 8 hour cream a try tonight and make sure his pjs are changed nightly. Then after a week if not workging will try sudocrem and then this Molluscum No More if that doesn't work.

So once the white core comes out does that mean the spot is finished and it will go? He just had a bath and scratched the top of one and I pulled the white thing out with tweezers - will have to boil those now! - does this mean the spot is finished?

Yes the white bit is the contagious bit. Once it's out the spot has gone. I put a bit of antiseptic over the area just to make sure.

cornsilk · 15/11/2008 12:26

My ds's had it and we let it run it's course, as advised by our doctor. They didn't really scratch them at all. Took much longer to go with ds1 who eats a limited diet and generally seems to be 'iller' than ds2. I would personally think that a good immune system would speed up the process.

mummypingu · 16/11/2008 21:00

my son has had it for 2.5 years on the backs of his legs, between legs and on his bottom.

feeling very frustrated by it all i took him to see dr on fri who said that really you have to let it run its course....in some extreme cases it can last for five years.

dr printed out information sheet which suggested popping them with tweezers etc, but thats completely impractical with my son.

this is the information printed out for me

Ds had these on his arm, he also prone to eczema so was itching lots. After 3 months they started looking inflamed & infected so gp said try bursting them and then put antibiotic cream on and thankfully they have completely gone . I was initially reluctant because sometimes I've read they can scar but fortunately not in ds' case.

But now dd has them too & she is sooo itchy poor love. Would really like to go down the antibiotic route with her but they're not infected so doubt gp will prescribe.

MadameCastafiore · 17/11/2008 07:39

Haqve used Elizabeth Arden 8 hour Cream for the last 2 days guys and it has made a huge difference - they are drying up without bursting and the itching has stopped and DS is happy to be rubbed in it because he likes the smell and it doesn't bother his excema'

Have asked DH to get some more today whilst he is at work - haven't told him how much it is though - he will be shocked!

am pleased for you - it looks horrible, so glad it is going. Will remember 8 hour stuff in future.

NikkiH · 17/11/2008 10:10

DS1 got them this time last year and is now down to one last spot. We've just let them run their course and used a moisturising cream to stop extreme itching. He has scratched the top off a couple of them and one looked like it was becoming infected but we used an antiseptic cream and it cleared up. They were under his arm and across his chest. His skin is as good as new now they've gone.

Ali4cotswolds · 17/11/2008 17:42

both of mine had it ... went after about 12 - 18 months. Left the molluscum alone & neither have any scars / marks as a result. My main problem was remembering that it was highly contagious & had to be careful at bathtime with towels, flannels and then when friends came to play not letting them put on our dressing-up clothes.
Good luck
