ANY EXPERIENCE OF CYCLOPENTOLATE (EYE DROPS FOR DD/DS)

I took my DD to the optician today for the first time (she is 4yrs old) and was told she over focuses and needs a further tests which involves some drops being put in her eyes which numbs/palaryses her eyes for 24 hours. Optician said it will sting for a bit ..... how much and for how long ??? Any info would be very gratefully received ....... thanks.

Can't help but bumping for you.

I have these for DD and need to put them in when she goes to her next appt.

I have a leaflet about them which I will try and find later - it said that they would sting for a little while (seemed to imply a number of minutes) and that her sight would be altered for a number of hours. I am more worried about actually getting them into her but I am sure it will be fine.

They are needed to relax the eye muscles so it si easier for the optician to test them, I think.

the drops are put in and only sting for a few seconds - they then take half an hour to work (to dilate the pupil so that the orthoptist can look into the back of the eye). We take dd to the hospital for her eye appointments and it is the orthoptist that puts the drops in, not me. Their pupils stay dilated for most of the day so it will affect their eyesight for a good few hours. DD gets hers done once a year so that her glasses prescription can be checked.

Thanks, i'm hoping not to have to put the drops in myself (the optician said he would if he could but i may have to if dd prefers). Now am thinking i have left it too late for her first test and that she may have needed the glasses yrs ago :-(

the only reason we went sooner is that dd had a squint so she got referred by our hv to the hospital orthoptist at about 18 months old (now 5years old) . If she hadnt had a squint we would never have had a reason to go. Dont be too hard on yourself as there is still plenty of time to correct any sight problems your lo may have.

Update : DD has now got her glasses (is +3.5 on one eye and +2.75 on the other so the glasses are quite thick) but i am having trouble persuading her to wear them. We have got a special reward chart solely for her good behaviour with the glasses but it's still not plain sailing. Any helpful hints or does she just need time to adjust ??
