I put her in her bumbo on top of low(ish) table in my bathroom while I cleaned the floor. She was happy looking at herself in the mirror one second then the next minute ....Thud face down on the tiled floor...

God how I regret it now. She screamed and cried for a while. Mummy cuddles and a sit outside with frozen chips on her head seemed to calm her.
Big bump but no blood.
She was almost due a nap at that time and has been sat since the fall about 15 minutes ago, fairly happy. Now she is falling asleep on my lap as I type.

Two Q's.

  1. should I take her to the hospital?
  2. shall I let her sleep?

I read somewhere you shouldn't sleep after a fall . DH says only if concussed.
How do I tell?

If she has had a good scream about it , and has bump and has now calmed down and has been playing , I would let her sleep it off .
If you are worried at all then give NHS Direct a ring and they will give you some advice as well .
If you are worried about concussion then have her asleep downstairs on the sofa with you and rouse her every half hour or so . If she rouses ok and then goes back to sleep I would let her .

Good luck

Just thought I should add I am only saying this as this is the advice I have been given in the past with my boys .
The amount of bumped heads they seemed to get in the first yr to 18 mths was shameful

MmeLindt · 13/11/2008 10:11

Does she normally sleep at this time of the day?

I would take her to the docs to make sure.

My DS fell out of his car seat (Dad lifted him not realising that he wasn't strapped in and he fell on his head on a concrete floor). He had a huge bump and I took him to the docs, just around the corner luckily. She checked that he was ok and told me what to look out for (unusualy sleepy, vomiting, glassy eyed).

I am sure that she is fine, but you will perhaps have more peace of mind if you have her checked.

Not sureabout the sleeping thing.

This happened to DD at exact same age, I still sort of stifle a scream when I think about it now. She seemed OK, but a couple of hours later projectile vomited. Took her to A&E and all was fine. Didn't x-ray, just looked into her eyes.

I think I would get her checked over.

I would pootle along to A&E - they are very good at checking bumped heads

Agree with TW that the signs sound good, and that NHS direct can be very reassuring too.

Having said that I let ds2 sleep off an awful fall once, and found that I just couldn't rouse him after an hour. He was very white and I really panicked. He took ages to rouse - we were in the car on our way to A & E by then - but he then regained all colour and was fine. My instinct had been right to let him sleep it off, but it was a close one. I wished I had got him checked over. A & E never mind seeing you, and the fright I had when I couldn't wake him took years off my life! The shock obviously made him sleep very very deeply.

Thankyou all ...

She seems awake again now, and usual self , bit crabby cos she usually is napping at this time... .
Anyway, I rang NHS direct who said to take her to A & E too ,so we are on our way there now. Thanks again...

From an Adults perspective......I had concussion when I was 15,I hit my head after being thrown from a horse.I was wearing a hat but it was a hired one so it slid off just as I hit the concrete.

I had to walk with help back to where I was staying on holiday (next door),and my vision was affected.I was taken to A&E who X Rayed my skul, and I was ok.I was told to go back and rest, but my Mum had to wake me frequently to ensure I was rousable.

All I wanted to do was sleep, and I slept most of the next few days. When I got up I tried to eat and felt nauseous, but didn't vomit.

I tried to play a board game that evening but couldn't focus properly, saw a GP who said I had bruised the part of my Brain concerned with vision, and it would pass.

It probablt took about a week, and then I was fine.
