My son is suffering from constant ear infections - we have ended up in casulty on occasions when he has been screaming and we have been concerned that it is something else. It is apparently viral not antibacterial so while he has had 4 courses of antibiotcs he still has it. We are up every night with it. Is there nothing that can be done? Would grommets help? how old til this ia done? Does anyone know a good ear nose and throat consultant to go and see in London/Hertfordshire? Thanks

constant ear infections are a sign of a poor/weak /over stressed immune system and / or a dairy intolerance (lactose mainly which is found in breast milk too to an extent)
the 4 lots of AB's will have killed off a vast majority of his friendly gut bugs too which will only increase mucus production that will help gunk up his ears and so cause an infection.

you could try to cut out any dairy if he has any.

read this, a bit down the page it mentions ear infections www.foodreactions.org/colic/

my son use to have constant ear infections, he would be on antibiotics every other week. So he basically finishe one course and have another infection just a week later.

It got so bad that when he was just 18months old he had to have a hearing aid fitted because repeated infections were reducing his hearing.

We tried everything including changing things in his diet, reducing dairy etc but nothing worked.

When he was 22 months old he finally had grommits fitted and they were fantastic! The infections stopped practically over night.

He is now nearly 8 and has only had about 4 infections in the last 5 years. Having the grommits fitted was the best thing we ever did.

he had to have a general anesthetic (sp?) when having them fitted but we were home from hosptial the same day and he was fine.

I would defiantely ask you GP if I were you

My 6 year old ds sufferred like this too. He had grommets put in when he was 2 years and it helped, but he is still prone to infections.

You need a refferal to a decent ENT, thwy will tell you that oral anti b's have no effect whatsoever on recurring ear infections. Your ds needs a spray or ear drops but GP's are reluctant to prescribe these without a letter from an ENT.

The normal procedure is 6 months watchful waiting, then a 6 week course of in the ear drops, if no improvment then they consider grommets. Danger is hearing can be affected if left untreated.

We put our ds onto goats milk as it is less mucusy and some people reccommend cranial ostepoathy although I didn't rate it and it is expensive.
