I need advice, I think my ds is having an allergic reaction to something (not life threatening!)

He has got patches of a nettle-like rash on his legs, arms and face. He hasn't eaten anything he hasn't had before. I've just given him a spoonful of piriton. Is there anything else I can/should do? He's fine in himself, no temp and breathing absolutely normal.

Washed with something different?

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 12/11/2008 18:34

No, that's the weird thing, we have the same washing powder, he's eaten a dinner he's had loads of times before but he's suddenly come up with this rash. Should I just put it down to bad luck? He doesn't seem to be finding it itchy (although I'm itchy just thinking about it lol )

piriton very good plan - if he gets any swelling(eyes, ears, lips etc) then prob best to take to walk-in-centre or a+e
Poor little thing how old is he?
Fingers crossed all will be ok

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 12/11/2008 18:47

He's nearly 4yrs. He seems fine, he just hasn't had this sort of thing happen before so I was a bit concerned. I'll keep an eye on him, thanks

if he starts to feel uncomfortable then cold cloths can relieve the itching.

3littlefrogs · 12/11/2008 18:53

Has he been in contact with animal or plants?

Think carefully about the last hour or so. Could he have handled something?

What about drinks?

misdee · 12/11/2008 18:55

does he drink orange squash?

Horton · 12/11/2008 19:00

If you have porridge oats, put some in an old sock and wash him with it in the bath. Very very soothing for itchiness. Piriton is the best idea but keep an eye on him and don't be afraid to call for help if it gets worse.

SoupDragon · 12/11/2008 19:04

Piriton's good. What was the last thing he ate/did before the rash appeared?

JHKE · 12/11/2008 19:19

You can try calamine lotion if you have it.. Help relieve the itch.
When dd had this rash, as it got worse each night, we went to a walk in centre and they advise that something as simple as changing the box of washing powder even though same make can cause it.. we still don't know what caused dd's.
Just keep and eye on it bus as rodg82 said if it goes on eyes and lips best to go to walk in centre.

My DS had this a couple of weeks ago. Dosed him up on Priton which worked very well. Not sure what caused the hives - he was at his cousin's home and the only thing he had which he hadn't had before was battenburg cake which he called "orange cake thing" - so can only assume it was the colouring in that.
BTW it did take a couple of days to get whatever was in his system out of it IYSWIM.

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 12/11/2008 21:06

Thanks for the messages. He seems fine now (asleep) and the piriton seemed to ease it quite quickly. The only thing I can think of is that we saw a friend's new cat today but we have cats and so do lots of my friends, parents etc and he's always be fine with them. Also we saw the cat this morning and the rash only came up this evening. Very strange.

We discovered DS1 reacts to tarmac being laid on roads. It's a topical allergy so all the exposed parts of his body get covered in hives about 20 minutes after walking through any road laying, which is presumably because of the particles of tar or whatever settling on his skin. We couldn't work out what it was for ages.
