it happened quite suddenly 3 weeks ago, after bad flu, my toddler (2years&4months) just won't put any weight onto her left foot and has gone back to crawling. after 6 hospital visits, xrays and ultrasound scan they can find no cause or reason for it and have referred her for physio. ive read abour sever's disease but this seems to affect older children and teens. please if anyone has any ideas or suggestions even the smallest thought would be appreciated.

...also forgot to say, its the heel area that seems to be affected and where she feels discomfort if pressed upon.

earlier this year my then 11 month old DD woke up one morning and couldn't/wouldn't put any weight on her left leg. She wasn't walking then but could easily pull up to stand and she seemed to be in pain whenever she tried.

We ended up in hospital and they did all the usual tests including blood tests and in the end diagnosed her with transient synovitis (think thats how its spelt). From what I remember if a child has recently had a virus then sometimes it can spread to the membranes lining the joints. It should usually pass (my DD was back to normal within a couple of days) although sometimes there are complications.

Did the hospital rule this out?

Other than that I can't suggest what might be wrong but I hope you can track down some answers soon

Hi there
I'm having a similar problem with my 16m dd, although it doesn't sound quite as severe as your dd.

My dd has been ill with constipation and loss of appetite, however we thought she was getting better at the start of last week but since Friday every time she wakes up she is really distressed and doesn't want to do anything other than lie down. She is also much more tired and lethargic than usual in the day, e.g won't climb up the stairs anymore.

Have been been giving her calpol which eventually calms her down although she is still very clingy and not herself at all but as the day goes on she will sit, stand and walk. We took her back to the doctors this morning who isn't really sure what it is other than it might be that her bowels still aren't working properly which is causing her discomfort. We've got to give her calpol for any pain/distress and lactulose for 2 weeks to see if it is her bowels.

I don't think this is quite the same as your dd, and my dd has improved a bit today as she wasn't as distressed for as long this morning. This is probably not much help but thought it might be reassuring for you to know that your dd isn't the only suffering in this way.

thank you so much both of you for your advice...yet another doctors visit tomorrow so will mention the transient synovitis ellymae, thanks..am hoping it is something like that which will eventually fix itself with time...maxmissie that sounds like something my dd has had before, all the tearfulness, digestive problems, loss of appetite and morning enthusiasm..she got over it after about 10 days and went completley back to normal, does feel like forever though doesnt it..doc said its so common for tots so hope shes better soon!

Have the hospital done any blood tests?
If it is the joint I would be asking them to look for signs of infection (this took an MRI to be seen in my DD).

pocoloco · 10/11/2008 14:50

theyve done blood tests which were clear, xrays & ultrasound and couldnt see anything.did your dd have a similar problem?they did mention an mri scan at one point but then decided on the ultrasound, as apparantly a general anaesthetic is necessary for a toddler..did your dd have to have this?

Yes she did, but her blood tests were abnormal so that indicated an infection and suggested that an MRI and surgery (to flush the joint) were the way to go. If your daughter's blood tests were normal then it sounds like they've eliminated infection which is good news.
