My 2 and a half year old was badly scratched by another child at nursery. It has left a wound about half a cm wide and has gouged out quite a lot of skin. Wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent scarring or whether it will just heal over itself?

You can try bio oil or vitamin E oil -- reputed to help prevent or reduce scarring, but I don't know whether that's been scientifically proven.

Hi Lucy no advice re treatment I am sorry but 4year old cut his knee badly about 2 months ago and I was certain it would scar as it was deep and nasty. There is absolutely no mark there at all now.

My mum used to work in the plastic surgery clinic of a hospital. The nurses there always recommended keeping the scarred tissue moisturised. They said that what you actually use is not so important as how often you use it. They said normal nivea is fine, rub into the skin twice a day (once it heals over obviously) and take care to massage the scar gently. It is the massage that makes the difference, and the frequency.

Second the massaging, it will help avoid kelloid scarring. DD burnt her had and we were told to massage and give her lots to do with her hand to keep the hand moving which would help the scarring. Obviously not so easy on the face

ds (2.4) had a scar from a razor. he did it about 2 months ago. unfortunately it has scarred but it might go.

My DD had a similar incident when she was 18 months old. It didn't cross my mind at the time that the scar could be permanent but now, aged 7, if you look closely you can still see the mark of the little shit child that pinched/scratched her. Its a small thumb nail shape on her cheek.

Meid · 08/11/2008 22:22

Okay, I can see I did the crossing out wrong. I'm sure I'll get it right time.

you can get hydrocolloid plasters which help to stop scars drying out and help prevent scarring - you can get them from boots

thanks all for your advice, H has picked the scab off twice and there is a nasty red mark there now so I'm going to try the above mentioned tips - probably while he's asleep!

Pure aloe vera gel is also vg to prevent scarring if you can get it on H!
