He's really badly constipated, and has been straining/groaning/crying for over half an hour. He won't let us near him, how can I help him?

glycerin supporsity from the chemist. It will shoot out.

needmorecoffee · 06/11/2008 19:30

and maybe a warm bath if it wouldn't freak him if it came out in the bath?

DisasterArea · 06/11/2008 19:30

vaseline

GrimmaTheNome · 06/11/2008 19:31

How old?
a warm drink might help.

DoNotAttempttoblowupparliament · 06/11/2008 19:31

You have my huge sympathies.

I have just been sat in the bathroom coaching DTD2 (7)through an hour of labour and "pooh birth". She passed a golf ball in the end so no wonder she was struggling bless her.

How old is he? The best thing for immediate relief is a glycerine supposiitary from chemists. Lactulose can help soften future stools up.

Phew emergency over! The log has landed, he's slumped over the sofa exhausted by it all - thank God for that!. Cheers for replies anyway.

He's 2btw. Lol Donotattempt - from the groans of disgust coming from dh who is changing him I suspect we have a similar situation.

needmorecoffee · 06/11/2008 19:34

whoooo-hooooo. Its exhausting isn't it. dd needed hospital help for a log, and I kid you not, that was over an inch wide and 8 inches long. She's only little.

milkysallgone · 06/11/2008 19:35

Yep, seems my midwifery training has come early

If I thought my ds1 was struggling I used to give him Calpol to help take the edge off going to the loo.

DoNotAttempttoblowupparliament · 06/11/2008 19:44

How did you get to hospital coffee?

The pooh was "crowning" and she couldn't stand up as it was painful.

She doesn't have a high threshold for pain bless her and this has really tested her.

Umlellala · 06/11/2008 19:44

We used to offer prunes, so dd would say 'i need a prune' meaning i need a poo and it's not coming. It's horrible though isn't it, espesh as dd wanted us to go away and not cuddle her. Dd hasnt pooed for two days now, got fever and cold and not eating or drinking, hope it wo nt be hell.

DoNotAttempttoblowupparliament · 06/11/2008 19:44

Oh and how did the hopital intervene?

needmorecoffee · 06/11/2008 19:47

we were there already as she was in with seizures. I had to shriek for a doctor as dd was screaming and the 'crown' was an inch wide and she was in agony (she hadn't been for a while)
The doc was an idiot and ignored me until I lay dd on the bed, whipped her nappy off so all could see the straining monstrosity. Doc gasped, put on gloves but by then, the whole pushing back of legs had helped and this thing shot out and got the doctor in the lap then flopped to the floor and scampered off.
Honestly, it was like Aliens.

milkysallgone · 06/11/2008 19:48

Well I don't mean to boast - but that must have been at least 2 inches wide sick

LOL
however DD2 used to get badly constipated and had to be coached through a poo in the library once [in her nappy] We gave her chocolate raisins to help since she wasnt mad keen on the old fruit and veg.

Salleroo · 06/11/2008 20:22

LOL - great thread. Needmorecoffee - hilarious (obv not at the time mind you).

coneflower · 08/11/2008 21:21

We have a juicer, and make "real" juice at least once a week - apple, carrot and ginger, it works miracles!!! Very good for you and does make a real difference.
