Poo problems for DS - help please!

My DS (2.5) has poo problems. He is witholding. Has memory like a baby elephant and doesn't like to go.

He is currently on lactulose, glycerin suppositories, drinks neat orange juice with meals, dilute orange juice, prunes, loads of F&V, almost no banana or eggs, has linseed, kiwi, everything you can think of

NO POO

Hasn't been since Saturday. Stamping and gurning in corner in extreme discomfort. I know there are others like him but I am at my wit's end. What on earth can I do?

The sickness may just have been a coincidence. Children can also vomited if they are 'bunged -up' so to speak. i would continue with the movicol as prescribed. He may be so used to holding on to his poo that he has a huge amount to get rid of. As long as his poos are soft and formed continue as you are. It can take months to sort these things out but it is safe to be on Movicol indefinately so don't worry about that. When his poos start to get sloppy/runny then consider reducing, but don't stop altogether straight away as he will go straight back to 'holding on'. He needs to learn that having a poo is ok, not painful and a good thing.

Hmmm - does sound as if your situation is totally different ALTHOUGH I did find with dd that she was holding back (so to speak) because she was terrified of it hurting (it didn't hurt/bleed every time but it got so she was worried it might!. At one point nursery had to call me to pop over as she refused to go to the loo without mummy to make sure it was ok ). Now that she trusts the movicol/magic juice she isn't holding on anymore which I think is easing things condsiderably.

We started on 2 sachets a day one in the morning and one in the evening for 5 days - things were defs a bit runny but for dd this was such a big change to hard poos she was ok with it. After 5 days we went down to the one sachet half in morning etc and soon we are going to alternating days.

Got to admit dd wasn't actually sick on the movicol - she's been absolutely fine with it- in fact it was before when she hadn't been to the loo for a few days she would be a bit under the weather and her temp would start to go up a bit (she is a girl for developing temperatures at the drop of a hat though!).

I haven't heard of children being sick on movicol although I do only know of 3 kids who have tried it other than my dd so not exactly the widest poll ever! Maybe you should pop back to see your GP - I know for us it is working out really well but I also know that if my dd was being sick at the same time as trying a new medication I would be thinking the same as you!

Thanks for your support. Problem with GP was he very nicely said he didn't know what would happen it was up to me to experiment!

I think I will try some movicol again tonight, just worried about the sick, on the other hand the witholding is bad too!!!

Got the recommended books so I will have a read too

Also had a thought - don't know if the books you are talking about are ones for kids - I got dd this book which she found very funny and it helped her get a bit of perspective about the whole poo situation (if 3 yr olds indeed have a sense of perspective! ).

Good luck - did you every think a few years ago you would spend your day typing the word 'poo' so much

daisy99divine · 13/11/2008 21:58

LOL Beagle, never indeed did I think I would type, think, dream and worry about POO half as much

Yes, I got this book and also the one about the mole who got pooed on and my DS favourite current game is to name everyone he can think of triumphantly going "Mummy POOES" and "Daddy POOES" on and on so far we have kept this to the confines of the bathroom, but it won't be long

I also got a Serious Book on Witholding that someone recommended, about to go to bed with it!

Had a day of wiggling and discomfort so gave a 1/4 sached of Movicol and he has done one big poo before bed.... I just don't know!!!

thanks for help and support
