It couldbe a murmur. Alot of babies and small children have these, they normally go away and don't need any treatment. Did she not say what she heard or thought it was?

lucykate · 05/11/2008 14:06

murmurs are very common, i have one (mine squeaks!), my dad has one, afaik, it's just a noise made with each beat.

SparklyGothKat · 05/11/2008 14:06

a murmur, but only when I asked if she thought it was a murmur still worrying tho

ds was diagnosed w a murmur last year (aged about 1-ish then), and referred to paediatric cardiologist.... who declared it to be innocent and ds to be perfectly healthy. I did worry until he confirmed it was all ok, but it's more than likely that callum is the same (statistically speaking etc).

SparklyGothKat · 05/11/2008 14:22

i think i am worried because of the weigh gain problems last year.

Sparkly - if he's ill it could just be because of that. Some children get a murmur when they're poorly and when it's checked again in a couple of weeks it's gone. I hope this is the case for Callum but I know you'll be worried because of his past poor weight gain.

TheMadHouse · 05/11/2008 17:46

DS1 had a mumur when he was really unwell and in hospital, as soon as he was better they checked again and it seemed to have gone. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about

greenlawn · 05/11/2008 19:38

Hello, how old is he? We're still waiting for referral to a specialist hospital for ds3's murmur - his is apparently an extra sound between the beats. Its been checked a couple of times (he's now 5 weeks) and hasn't disappeared yet, though many of them are apparently "innocent". We were told to look out for blueness around lips or fingers and breathlessness while feeding as danger signs in the meantime.

AFAIK the referral is for a heart echo and then discussion with cardiologist - when we get the referral through I may be able to give you more info. Hope he is otherwise getting better.

whizzybangbang · 05/11/2008 19:47

dd2 had a murmur picked up on her 6 week check, have been seen a couple of times by the cardiologist but don't have to go back until she is three.
They are happy that it is an innocent murmur, we've been told that it could get louder when she is unwell but should not cause her any problems.
Fingers crossed that Callum's is exactly the same.

i have a whoosh apparently... initially i was told it was an 'extra heartbeat' and i thought i may be whisked off to some mutoid experimental lab for tests but it seems pretty dull by their standards.

Icanseethesea · 05/11/2008 20:04

DD2 had this last year when she had a chest infection. Apparently it is not unusual and will probably go away on its own. I did worry horribly all over Christmas, but by the time I got her back to the doctor it had gone.

HTH, please don't worry too much.

Haylstones · 05/11/2008 20:08

My dd was poorly and saw the out of hours doc who picked up a murmur. As advised, I went to see Gp after a couple of weeks and it was still there so they referred me to a specialist. However, there was a huuuge wait so we went for a private appointment (in retrospect that should have reassured me as if they suspected anything bad I'm sure it wouldn't have been that long a wait). In the end the private speicalist agreed there was a murmur but an innocent one, which thsnkfully most of them are. We went for a check up 6 months on and it was still the same so nothing to worry about. I do know how worrying it is despite lots of people reassuring you but please try not to worry too much. I was an emotional wreck and cried for hours [overreaction emoticon] so I am glad we got it checked out quickly.

(Incidentally, dd's murmur was almost undetectable when lying down but clear when she sat/stood up)

Wallace · 05/11/2008 20:09

try not to worry His weight is fine now, isn't it? Also if it was anything to worry about it would probably have been picked up by now (I'm presuming because he was premature he has probably had more medical check ups etc than normal)

SparklyGothKat · 05/11/2008 22:16

thats what I thought Wallace. His weigh is ok now, he is still small for his age, but he is ok. We have been discharged from the hospital, as they were happy with him, and when he had the weigh gain problems they checked his heart many times..

Hi, Sparkly. My DD (19 montsh) has a murmur. Docs think it's a flow murmur, which means she should eventually outgrow it. They come and go apparently. The first time GP heard it was when she was about 6 wks and she dispatched us immediately to the hospital paediatrician. By the time we got there (only 30 mins later) it was gone! Various GPs have picked it up 2 or 3 times since as it is more likely to be present when babes are poorly so that is probably why it gets picked up when you are at the docs. Hope it is all OK for you.
