Going out of mind with worry, 5 year old constant tummy pain!!

HELP!!

One of my twin daughters started primary school in September and we have had CONSTANT tummy pains.

Unfortunately she has a metobolic condition which requires her to eat, however, in the mornings or when she comes home, she tells me her tummy hurts and points to her bowel, and says tummy won't let her eat, and then goes without food!

If I push her, she says she feels sick and runs to the toilet and hangs over it. It is hit and miss as to if she actually vomits.Sometimes she complains the pain is so bad, it actually makes her feel sick initially so she doesn't want to eat.

I have had her up St Thomas's as they were concerned about her not eating. They xray'ed her and there was no blockages.

She isn't constipated at all. Really, the oppposite, no hard stools at all.

The other morning she woke up and sat on the loo for a poo, and literally cried with the pain as she past, however, it was soft and nothing to write home about.

This morning she said she felt tired and had tummy pains but this seems to be all the time, regardless of what day school or weekend.

I am trying to play it down, as I was giving her calpol but she was still complaining of pain??? I stopped the meds for a while as I thought if it was something it would come to a head and then they would have to review her properly in A&E. But apart from her other morning episode, it has been moderate pain.

I have explained to her that mummy believes her cos she doesn't feel the doctor does, as when I took her to the doctors they examined her and said it all felt fine. They also sent off a urine test which came back clear!!!

I am tearing my hairout!!

Who else has gone through this??? How did you deal with it? What tests did you insist on????

I hate seeing my honey a) in pain b) not eating and c)having nausea.

I did ask the doctor to refer her privately to someone who could help but because she is under St Tommies for her metobolic condition, they are insisting we are refered back there, so I am at a dead end!!!

ARRRHHHHHH!!

Nic

a long shot but is she too young for abdominal migraine?

DS1 has suffered on and off probably since he was 7, mainly feeling sick at mealtimes, but we had a really bad episode last year (aged 10) where we ended up in A&E at 1am.

this was useful for DS, but maybe not for your DD. I'm sure there are lots of links that will help you decide if you need to be asking your GP about it.

Poor little thing, I hope you get to the bottom of it soon. X

Sorry to hear this Nic. Its so distressing when your little one is ill like this.
Are you sure youre not allowed to get a 2nd opinion somewhere else?
My eldest has suffered from cramps and nausea for a while, turned out she had an infection and some antibiotics cleared it up. Not suggesting that's what it is but...we were worried for a while that it was anxiety connected to going to school and in the end they did blood tests and found it.

It does sound like it could be the abdominal migraine. My middle son had this for several months when he was about 9,it was hell as he was writhing around on the floor and the doctors were so unhelpful - said he was making it up so I held the phone close to him screaming and crying - changed their minds after that. We went to a homeopath in the end who gave us some tablets to help with the nausea and cramps which seemed to help a little - I think it made me feel better that I was doing something. Warm hot water bottles and back rubs also helped but I don't know if there's any actual medicine to "cure" it. So unimpressed with GP/hospital on this one, but keep pushing.

DS suffered a similar thing a few years back? I had him backwards & forwards to GP / Out of Ours care as he was screaming & I thought he may have appendicitis. He too was X rayed etc, and I thought he may have stomach migraine or even IBS.

It turned out he had inflamed glands in his stomach (I didn't know there were glands there) and he was given Buscopan to stop the spasms and Paracetamol + Ibuprofen for pain. The Buscopan really helped him. We now know when he is ill he caould be prone to similat attacks.

I hope you get this sorted as I really understand your frustration & fears.

Hiya Tilly and everyone,

Charlotte is still complaining about the tummy pain and as voiced above, the GPS do think I am making it up.

I have tried giving her a small dose of lactose to see if she could pass her toilet today with no pain. She woke and said her tummy was sore but did a soft jobbie and no pain. However, I have noticed that she is tired when she has these pains, always yawning?????

Thanks Tilly for the site link, I am not sure what to think. I am using heat pads and a hot water bottle bunny for her at night. As well as letting her have a soak in a warm bath.

Buscopan? Is that for IBS??? I have heard of that. Can't think why I know the name???

I will keep you posting in my fight for her wellbeing and I am so grateful for all your responses.

Nic

It would be worth asking for a coeliac test. That can cause tummy pains, tiredness, lethergy and low spirits in children.
The initial test is a simple blood test which your GP can do. Look at the coeliac society website for more info www.coeliac.org.uk
