DD has only very recently started getting a very dry scalp and yellowy scabs on her head (she is 2.3) it has gradually got worse. We were using dentinox but it didn't do anything so then I got some adult Neutrogena T/gel but again it hasn't helped.
Most of the time you can't tell as her hair covers the scabs and they almost blend in with her hair colour, but sometimes it is dry and flakey and looks bad, but i'm more upset with the fact that it bothers her as she often rtys to itch her head

What else can I try? Think the weather and heating is only making it worse

Baby oil is brilliant at getting rid of it but it does leave their hair greasy for a few days. Rub it all over her head before she goes to bed and then wash off and comb through in the morning.Do this every night and it should get rid of it in a few days. Like i said earlier it does leave their hair a bit greasy so best to start doing it when your not planning on going anywhere special. Should clear up in a few days, my dd,s did.

my miracle thing is Badger Balm. its made from organic olive oil and chamomile, its really good, I massage it into DS2 scalp every day when there is cradle cap and every week just to keep it healthy. I only wash his hair about every 2 weeks as the shampoo dries out the scalp.

Baby oil worked for both mine too.

Gmakes3 · 03/11/2008 13:41

Try, boots olive oil, worked on DD, hair looked greasy but it worked. Only cost about a £1.00 so cheaper too.

Baby oil overnight worked for my dd - she had cradle cap until she was around 4 - but apparently it deters headlice, so there is a benefit!

sammysam · 04/11/2008 09:40

Thank you everyone! Badger balm looks good-I was told recently that you shouldn't use olive oil-not sure why though?

I found some baby oil and used it last night-looks like it has worked a bit-about to try and wash it off.

Is it weird that she didn't have it when she was younger and has only just got it now?

I have a similar prob with my ds (3). He had it as a baby and I put loads of almond oil on (to be fair I don't think the type of oil matters), left it on for an hour and then brushed the flakes off with a facial brush. It took a while but worked. Recently it has come back again and I started using head and shoulders, not much and just a couple of times a week and it's gone completely. Make sure you dry her hair throughly too as I think this helps.

ajandjjmum · 04/11/2008 15:28

I've just remembered that we also found vaseline to be quite good!

fillybuster · 04/11/2008 15:30

Aha! Good to realise that my ds (3) is not alone...am going to try some of these suggestions as his cradle cap has come back recently quite badly....

alittleteapot · 04/11/2008 15:44

we used shea nut butter from neals yard - worked a treat after olive oil had failed

lyra41 · 04/11/2008 16:29

when you've oiled the head, wait about half an hour, then use a nit comb. It lifts off the crust a treat. then shampoo using a mild baby shampoo to remove any flakes that haven't been removed by the comb.

muddleduck · 04/11/2008 16:39

My HV told me that the best thing to do is lots of brushing as this stimulates the blood flow to the scalp. I've no idea if this is true or not but I do know that ds1's cc improved dramatically when I bought him a new more bristly brush and then got much worse again after he had chicken pox as I stopped brushing because of the scabs.

sammysam · 04/11/2008 19:03

I bought some head and shoulders today to give it a go priceyp!!
Will baby oil her head again tonight and brush her hair a lot from now on -I have never really brushed her hair as it never got tangled or messy so that could well be a cause?!
Might be worth getting a nit comb as well! Feel so sorry for her as it itches her head so i'll try everything just so it works!
Thank you so much for all your suggestions!

Fingers crossed for you! I never used to brush my DS hair either (not a lot there really), but I think you're right it does help.
