DD is 10. has had ongoing tummy pain and nausea for an entire year. have tried antacids with no effect. diet is rubbish, does't eat much of anything. behaviour better than itused to be but still poor and related to how she is feeling.

and i'm a nurse and have seen adults being scoped and really don't want to think of my baby having an anaesthetic or having a hosepipe shoved down her throat. eek.

endoscopy on friday. at bristol childrens hosp. have to be there at 7.30am (!)

Has anyone any advice about this. DD is fine. i'm crapping myself.
how long does it actually take?
will it hurt afterwards?
will they tell me the results on friday or do i have to wait for the follow up appt which will probably be anothr 4 months?
any nasty effects of anaesthetic?anything else i need to do?
TIA

My DS5 had an endoscopy last year, when he was 8.
He was absolutely fine (and I was worried he would get very anxious as he has Asperger's Syndrome and does worry about things.)
The staff were all superb and very reassuring, especially when giving the anaesthetic. He was in theatre for longer than I expected-I think it was about an hour before they called us to the recovery area.
The surgeon came round afterwards and told us that his intestines looked as though it was likely he did have Coeliac Disease but we had to wait for the biopsy results to be sure (They confirmed that he does have it).
He was kept on the ward for a couple of hours to make sure he was eating and drinking ok and then allowed home. He was fine-a bit of a sore throat if I recall, but not too bad.
Hope you get some useful results for your DD- My DS has been transformes since going on the gluten-free diet. Much more energy, has had a huge growth spurt, much more colour in his cheeks, and much happier-all good!

I hope all goes well for your dd on Friday.

I have no experience other than I had a gastroscopy last month. I believe your dd will have a GA for this which is good. It was very quick - 10-15 minutes including being sedated and I was told the results straight away but then no biopsies were taken so didn't need to wait for those results.

Felt fine after procedure { sheer relief it was over } although throat was slightly sore for a couple of days afterwards. Perhaps get some lozenges in to be prepared.

Sorry-I was not around last night! Please don't worry-honestly, DS5 is a very nervous child and he was absolutely fine!
Is there anything that is particularly worrying you? The worst bit is obviously when they are given the anaesthetic, but the staff were so good my DS did not panic at all.
He felt a bit funny when he came round afterwards, but was soon eating a piece of toast and feeling better.
Any specific questions, please ask!

Tiggiwinkle · 04/11/2008 07:59

By the way, I have had it done myself and know it is not particularly pleasant when you have it done awake as an adult. But your DD will obviously be totally unaware so will not feel any discomfort at all other than the slight sore throat afterwards!
Take some food and drinks for yourself, as it is likely to be a long day-our hospital did not have any facilities for parents to make drinks etc.

Good luck-let us know how it goes!

Do you know what they are looking for-is it for Coeliac or something else?

DisasterArea · 04/11/2008 10:21

i think coeliac. but waver between really not sure and the fact that something must be wrong somewhere and not wanting to admit that if there isn't she is just insane.
so we'll see.
really i'd rather there would not be anything wrong but it is no normal for a 10 year old to be constantly having tummy aches and feeling sick and not eating anything.
so either something physical wrong or mentalness.

Has she had a positive blood test for coeliacs?
My DS was tested because one of my older boys has the disease. I was really quite surprised when the test came back positive as he did not have that many symptoms, although once he was on the diet the change in him was obvious.

DisasterArea · 04/11/2008 13:18

blood test was 'inconclusive'. Iga just on the edge of normal/low.
i really don't know if that is the problem. her symptoms fit but then they can also fit other stuff.
