I've been fine until now but starting to get worried now, my ds who is 3 is going in hospital tomorrow to have his tonsils and adenoids out. He suffers with epilepsy and seems to also suffer quite a few bouts of tonsilittis and in this triggers his seizures. I'm hoping he will be fine any advice from anyone??

Hiya

My DS had his tonsils out about 18m months ago, just before he was 3. It did feel scary as he was so small, but it was actually fine. He wasn't at all happy when he came round from the anaesthetic but that differs with each child.

He will be fine Take something to read as it feels like forever whilst they are gone, and get him a lovely present for when he wakes up!

Hi Janbo25

my DS had his tonsils and adenoids out in April, he was 3.3 at the time. By now your little one will have had the op and no doudt be fine. The most important thing after for us was keeping to the schedule for the pain killers. We also were given AB's so we had to write it all down and make sure all the different meds were spaced out properly. we had a problem with one of the liquids and got it replaced with suppositaries which our DS seemed to prefer, they were also much easier to give at night when he was half asleep. We kept an eye on the wound site, it should be a whitish colour. also we kept checking his breath for any smell that might indicate infection. Biggest problem was boredom after a week inside as you are advised to keep them inside and away from people. We reduced the painkillers towards the end of the two weeks rather than a sudden finish..he was fine with this. Scratchy food like toast is good, they say, as it helps rub away the wound 'sluff', but we were happy with him eating anything. weirdest thing was the silent breathing at night, no more wheezing and snuffling. He had a real growth spurt after..we were just so glad it had been done and gone so well. Hope its all the same for you!

Well he's had it done and we're back home, he was veru sickly after the operation although the next day he was eating and drinking well, and at the moment the pain doesn't seem to be bothering him either. I'm just conscious I don't get complacent as i have heard that they can become quite bad again after 4 or 5 days when the anaesthetic as fully worn off as anyone had experience of this?? then there is still the obvious risks of infection and bleeding are these rare??

Great news its gone well...i was keeping an eye out to see if you would write again and i was really pleased you were back home and your little one was ok. I think the risk of bleeding is really rare and if it happens it is pretty soon after. Have you got AB's? if so the risk of infection is very very low. I think the anaesthetic would have worn of after a day or so, if your DS is ok then it should'nt get worse if you keep to the pain medication schedule. Have you noticed if your Ds's voice has changed? My boys voice went up in pitch..we were told it was because the tonsils had been pushing the voice box and with them gone it changed the dynamics in the voice and throat. It did go back to how it had been after a month or two.

thanks for replying, we were under the same impression as you about bleeding however whilst in hospital a young girl was rushed in for a blood transfusion etc as she had a bleed 10 days after her op and the dr's said there is a risk of bleeding for 10 days!! he hasn't been given any ab's so just keeping an eye on him. His voice doesn't seem to have changed that we have noticed either.

oh.....about the bleeding....that sound a pretty scary experience and would have put you on edge...I hope your son continues to make a speedy recovery, (I just remembered I made a star chart for my son to record his medicine and i got him something after each three days)..wishing you all the best.

Would he eat manuka honey? It's very good for very sore throats and also naturally antibiotic. You need to get the stuff that's above level 10 in strength. They have it in Holland & Barrett.
