water infection in 2 year old? Any advice?

Dd was up all night Thursday with a raging temperature.

No visble signs of illness, but when I changed her she squirmed and said it hurt, especially around her front bum (Don't know what else to call it....winkie?...anyway you get the drift)She also smelt of wee a lot.

Took her to docs, he has given her ab's. She keeps saying her tummy hurts. Temperature all last night as well

Would a water infection cause such a high temperature?

please...........

I think they can. DD has a temp of 41 degrees and the hospital thought it might be a wee infection (in fact it was tonsillitis). Did they test her wee?

artichokes · 25/10/2008 15:53

That should say "DD had a temp..." It was a few weeks ago. My point being the hospital clearly thought a water infection was a likely culprit for a very high temp.

fizzbuzz · 25/10/2008 16:00

No they didn't test it.
Said to bring her back if no improvement after ab's had finished...

Thats odd. I thought they were usually quite careful and took teh sample to check it wasn't anything that needed unusual anti-bs. It is a 'mare getting a sample out of them though.

I hope she gets better soon.

ktmoomoo · 25/10/2008 16:05

my dd gets alot of water infections and has been told to drink cranberry juice to ease it , it seems to work well and also stays off acid based foods as makes her urine strong ,which stops it being so uncomfortable when passing urine , hope this helps ,

ktmoomoo · 25/10/2008 16:06

also hope u dd gets better soon , if she not like cranberry , just get lots of water to drink , but not orange xx

feedmenow · 25/10/2008 16:06

I was under the impression that they take UTI's in young children quite seriously as it is very unusual?

My dd1 had one when she was about 3 and was referred to hospiyal for an lidney ultrasound because, or so they told me at the time, it is unusual and could therefore have an underlying cause.

But back to the original question, to my understanding they can cause high temps and can make you generally feel pretty under the weather and confused (or at least it can in the elderly....)

ktmoomoo · 25/10/2008 16:08

my daughter gets hot and irratable when she has a water infection , in the elderly it causes confusion too [i work with the elderly ] it can cause them to act very out of character .

fizzbuzz · 25/10/2008 17:44

Well she has had a temperature now for 48 hours, and was was wickering and talking in her sleep

It seems to spike and then go down, and then up again. Should I go for further advice? She seemed a bit better this morning but is limp and hot again now

Worried sick tbh.

How high is her temp Fizzbuzz? And can you control it by alternating calpol and nurofen junior?

fizzbuzz · 25/10/2008 17:50

I've been doing that, but it doesn't seem to work much at night.

I am hopeless at taking temperature, she will not cooperate under any circs with it,even when really ill, but she feels very hot...it's the fact that it has been 48 hours that is concerning me

OP posts:
artichokes · 25/10/2008 17:56

Do you have a digital ear thermometer? If not it is worth getting one. They only need to be in the ear for about 3 seconds and so even the least co-operative child in teh world (DD) can't beat them.

Does she often have temps? My DD does so 48 hours would not in itself worry me. But a very high temp, or a very floppy child, or symptoms getting worse would all worry me.

If you feel something is not right then you should seek further advice. You are in the best position to know.

PhantomOfTheChocolateCake · 25/10/2008 17:58

Hi.
Does it sting when she goes for a wee? Is she weeing more? This can be a sign for a UTI. If it was a kidney infection then she would have tummy ache aswell as a fever, a UIT is an infection of the urethra coming from the kidneys and there isn't always pain as they are different bits.
The antibiotics need time to work and it's important than she drinks alot to flush any infection out. It is normal for a fever to come and go, if you are not good at taking her temp then putting your hand on her tummy is a less accurate way but it works. If her belly is hot then she has a fever. Alternate the paracetamol and ibuprofen, one every 2 hours to keep on top of the fever. If you think she's not getting any better or is feeling worse then call NHS direct and get her seen by the out of hours. A UTI doesn't normally need any investigations, it is often caused by the child wiping in the wrong direction but check this with your GP. They may wish to investigate if she has more than a couple of episodes.

fizzbuzz · 25/10/2008 18:39

She feels hot on her tummy, and she definitely has been moaning about tummy aches which is why we took her in the first place.

I don't know if it stings when she wees, she can't tell me , but she winces when I change her. She doesn't wipe herself yet, but I have been tortured beyond belief by water infections myself, so guss it could be hereditary.

I would say she is not getting any better rather than getting worse. She seemed to rally a bit this morning, but then slipped back. It's just that she is so hot at night, and slept unti 10.ooam this morning...

Do you have a Children's A&E where you live?

fizzbuzz · 25/10/2008 18:45

Yes, 5 mins down the road

I would give them a ring for some advice. They normally don't mind. The GP should have sent a urine sample off to find out if it was an infection. I would see what they suggest as they (infections) can get nasty. If she's still in nappies then it can be because she's pooped and the bugs in her poo have moved IYKWIM. There isn't anything you could have done. Make sure she's having alot to drink and give them a ring. I used to work in one, they are use to having parents phoning in for advice.

I hope she's feeling better.

fizzbuzz · 25/10/2008 18:52

Thanks Phantom

No problem. Let me know how thing go.

GreenMonkies · 25/10/2008 18:59

I would take a wee sample and just take her to the childrens A&E.

What anti-b's did they give you? It should be trimethaprim, it tastes vile but does work very well if you can get it down them, she should respond in 24 hours to it. If she's not improving in that time then get her seen again pronto.

Hope she's better soon.

GreenMonkies · 25/10/2008 19:05

I second the cranberry thing, Ocean Spray do some lovely "combinations" if she doesn't like pure cranberry, we like the cranberry and pomegranite one the best, also the cranberry and blackcurrent and cranberry and raspberry, dilute it slightly and let her drink as much as possible.

fizzbuzz · 25/10/2008 19:15

They gave her trimethaprim, twice a day, she has had 2 doses.

I can't take a wee sample can I? I thought the anti-biotics would have stopped it showing up

OP posts:
PhantomOfTheChocolateCake · 25/10/2008 19:20

Phone them up. If she still has the symptoms then the chances are she still has the bug.

exasperatedmummy · 25/10/2008 20:19

I would phone NHS direct or your childrens A&E. Two doses? What are the doses, thats not very much or is it?

The wee sample is important but not vital at this stage. It will show if she has blood in her urine which can be detected very simply and straight away. This would indicate a UTI, for bacteria you would probably need a sterile sample anyway.

ARe you giving her calpol and ibruprofen to keep the temps down? Temps will often spike of a night. Its horrible when they are ill isn't it. I second the ear thermometer = they are expensive but worth their weight in gold.

Make sure she is drinking lots and lots and lots AND lots But i reallly wouldnt leave this until monday, it could be that the ABs prescribed aren't working for the bacteria that is causing the infection and she might need a different type.
