Why oh why is DD hacking up a lung every single night?

On the dot, between 11 and 1. She coughs and coughs for ages until she wakes herself up, then after I've settled her she coughs some more. It goes around 1. She's not coughing at any other time of the night, no wheeziness and no cold symptoms apart from the occasional sneeze. What could this be? It's a really nasty cough, sounds quite painful. Thanks

is she asthmatic?

DSs asthma always manifests itself as a cough.

Or it could be an allergic thing? and happening in bed because something in her bedroom environment is aggravating it?

I would take her to the docs to get it checked out.

DS1 used to do this and the doctor said it was caused by nasal drip (pleasant, eh? hgrin]). Basically little bits of gunk drip down the back of their throat and make them cough. It started after he'd had a cold and carried on for quite a few weeks afterwards.

DD1 does this too just after she goes to bed. Goes on for half an hour, maybe less, then sleeps peacefully. Wondering too.

has it recently started, and does this coincide with you starting to use your central heating? It could be that her room is too dry and that there is no moisture in the air. You can get little ceramic pots to hang on your radiators, that let off vapour when the heating is on to stop the air from becoming too dry. Maybe this would help?

Not asthmatic afaik It's strange because nothing changes in her room at that time. I'll take her the docs next week I think. I wondered about nasal drip Olihan. She hasn't had a cold recently afaik but maybe she had a really mild one and I didn't notice [slack mother emoticon] She's 14 months btw.

oh, forgot to say, you put water into the pots (thats where the vapour comes from.

We have the heating on for her bath but turn it off when she goes to bed so it's usually cool by the time she starts coughing. Will keep that in mind though. I used to put a bowl of boiling water (out of reach, natch) in her bedroom when she had a cold so I'll put one in there about 10 tomorrow night and see if it helps. Thanks everyone

There is a cough virus going round though that generally only occurs at night in bed...Ds has had it sice late August. Just listening to him now.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 25/10/2008 00:07

Oh is there Solo? Maybe that's what it is. Since August? Aaaarrrrgh! I thought it might pass in a few days. Your poor DS.

Yes there is. I don't know any more though and I haven't had him to the docs with it. They never actually do anything anyway, so not much point. Hope things improve quickly for you over there though.
