what constitutes a temperature in a toddler?

nursery said my dd had a temp - 37.8 according to dh, then 38.7 when i spoke to them. made a drs appt as she has been wheezy, apparently an asthmatic wheeze, but no temp.
I'm a bit confused, how high a temp constitutes 'a temp' in a toddler?

well from experience, and I have to say I get aghast at what some people consider constitutes a temperature

I don't worry under 38.5

Between 38.5 and 39 I'll strip off, give calpol if they have other symptoms eg pain, discomfort

Over 39.5 I'll intersperse calpol and nurofen (for both my kids DD has febrile episodes)

I'll only worry if temp is approaching 39.9 and the calpol and ibuprofen have not brought it down within 30 - 40 minutes

Is your DD asthmatic .. does she have inhalers?

Twiglett · 22/10/2008 17:34

I don't take to doctors unless other symptoms concern me or temp not coming down

I agree with Twig except that I would start to worry if the temperature didn't start to go down within 2-3 days or if the calpol/ibuprofen only kept the temperature down for a short while. We spent last night at the children's ward with DS - he has tonsilitis and a chest infection I knew something was not right when his temperature only came down for an hour or so after the dose and he had it for 3 days.

Maybe your DD's temperature came down by itself by the time she saw the GP?

yes, it could have been up and come down i suppose. She's never had a temp before so i didn't really know what temp was a 'temp' IYSWIM! I took her to the gp mainly in case it was a chest infection and not an asthmatic thing. he gave me more inhalers (she had blue but i've been given a purple one too; presumably the equivalent of my brown one?)and some predisalone and antibioitcs to 'cash in' if she doesnt improve, as we're going away next week.

will check her temp again in an hour or so, she seems ok so far. was busy opening and closing the GPs sesk drawers etc
