Does anyone know if you can get diarrhoea from cats?

I know it sounds like an odd question, but DS (nearly 6) has had diarrhoea for 3 days now - not really bad, but enough for him to have a bit of a tummy ache now and again not to make it to the toilet in time once or twice, hence not at school. Have just booked to see the doc tomorrow, though can't think there'll be anything much he can do as yet. But we have a cat and kittens around that DS has been playing with a lot so just wondering if there's any common bug that you can catch from cats? Or any other ideas of what it might be? He's not being sick and seems completly as right as rain apart from this.

Have bred pedigree cats for over 10 years and raised 2 children.
There is nothing that would fit in with your sons symptoms. Cats can carry toxoplsmosis ( also found in the soil )but firstly your cat would need to be infected and thats unlikely, plus i think the symptoms are flu like not upset tummy. cat scratch disease, but again wrong symptoms. You should encourage him to wash hands before eating etc but in my opinion this is not because of your cats and kittens. Hope he is feeling better soon.

Thanks for you reply. He's been to the doctor's today, who put my mind at rest on that score. probably just a viral infection which will clear up soon (hopefully). I do instill in him that it's important to wash his hands thoroughly, but he is a 5 year old boy...... say no more.

well thats encouraging news, nice to blame someone i know, but at least the kitties can sleep peacfully now their fears of eviction are over
I know pets can carry disease but i found its usually those without pets that create the most alarm about them.
I remember the comments when my baby was born - my cat is as likely to sit on her as i am lol he would run the other way rather than get too close.
